Two People Fined For Travelling 250 Miles To Cornwall During Lockdown

Two People Fined For Travelling 250 Miles To Cornwall During Lockdown

Just don't do it, folks

A couple have been fined by police after they drove more than 250 miles from their home in London to have a day out in Newquay, Cornwall.

The pair were issued with penalty notices yesterday afternoon (Saturday 25 April) after they decided to get out of the city for some 'fresh air' and headed for the coast, several hours' drive away.

The East Cornwall Specials explained what happened on Twitter in an attempt to discourage everyone else from breaking the coronavirus lockdown restrictions in a similar fashion.

Remember, we're only supposed to be travelling if it's absolutely necessary - to get food or medicine, or for a small bit of exercise each day.

A small bit of exercise doesn't include going out for a lovely jaunt to the coast some 250 miles away.

The police wrote: "Whilst on patrol in Newquay this afternoon penalty notices were issued to a couple who had travelled down from London for the day to get some fresh air."

Yeah, that's a pretty silly move.

This latest set of fines comes just a day after Devon and Cornwall Police issued more fines and seized a car that they discovered two people sleeping in on an improvised mini-break from Kent.

That's even further away than London.

The two people were having a kip inside their car in Falmouth and slapped with penalty charges by the cops for breaking the coronavirus lockdown.

Then, it turned out that the driver of the car had no licence or insurance, which led to the police taking the car away from them, too.

How they managed to get back to Kent after that is anyone's guess.

A probationary police officer, known on Twitter as The Hungry Copper, tweeted: "Found 2 people sleeping in a car in #Falmouth Checked their details & both live in #Kent & had driven down for a mini break.

"But driver had No Insurance & No Driving Licence! Car seized & 2 #FixedPenaltyNotices issued for Breaching the #Covid_19 #lockdown #restrictions #StayHome."

Police have been made to work pretty hard to keep people from flouting the rules of the lockdown. Officers in Cornwall issued 169 people over the Easter weekend for various things, including things like driving hundreds of miles to get an eBay purchase.

Other people have been busted for going fishing, or travelling out into the countryside to get away from their family.

Charming.

Anyway, stay inside and don't drive hundreds of miles for no reason, and everything will be OK.
