A woman was left horrified when a giant winged insect, complete with sting, dropped out of the sky and landed in her garden. Nightmare fuel.

Samantha Stonely, who lives in Willerby, near Hull, was having a tea break in her garden when the bug, which was longer than her index finger, fell out the sky and died in front of her. She described the moment as 'like a scene from a horror movie'.

The 28-year-old, who has been working from home, said people don't believe her when she tells them how big the insect was.

Speaking to Hull Live, she said: "All of a sudden this thing came flying over us and we just thought, 'What the hell is that?'"

"I talk about the size of it and people don't believe how big it was if they weren't there."

She decided to spread the word about the insect as she's concerned that they could be harmful to children.

Samantha added: "I would hate anyone's child to get stung by that because it could do some real damage.

"It was huge. It's not something I've ever seen before, it's something you would expect to find abroad.

"I've been to a lot of places, including Australia, and I've never seen something quite that big."

A number of workmen were in Samantha's garden at the time, fitting some decking. Describing the moment they all saw the insect, she said: "It just hit the floor and didn't move from that position.

"We were all so shocked and just looked at each other like, 'What do we do now?'

"It frightened me so it would frighten any child coming across it playing in their garden."

Samantha spotted the insect just days after a man who lives nearby says he's fairly certain he spotted an Asian Hornet.

Paul Everingham, who lives in east Hull, said he and his two-year-old son Noah found the insect, that he says was as big as his thumb, in his garden. He managed to capture the bug in a plastic tub where he was able to get a better look at it.

He told Hull Live: "I'm 99 percent sure it is a giant Asian killer hornet. It said online that it can kill humans in one shot.

"Its body is about an inch and the stinger is at least another half an inch. Altogether, it is at least as big as your thumb."

However, after having another look, Paul said it could be a giant horntail wasp, which looks similar to the giant Asian killer hornet, but isn't harmful to humans. So that's a relief.
