Why three major countries were left out of Donald Trump's long 'Liberation Day' tariffs list

They found time to tariff uninhabited islands, so why not these three countries?

There are three big countries which you won't find on Donald Trump's 'Liberation Day' list of tariffs.

The US President yesterday (2 April) announced a very extensive list of tariffs to be levied against countries large and small, along with some parts of the world that would be shocked to learn they've been tariffed if only they weren't completely uninhabited.

During his announcement, Trump displayed placards with lists of countries on them and the tariffs the US would now be charging them.

There was also a column with a figure which claimed to be how much these countries tariffed the US, but some of these figures have left people very confused as how the Trump administration reached such numbers.

Some countries such as Cuba, Belarus and North Korea were not included on the list because the US already has harsh measures in place for them, but on the incredibly long list there were three very important countries which were conspicuously absent.

Russia

Donald Trump is apparently 'p**sed off' with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin for calling for a transitional government in Ukraine to set the stage for elections.

Russia is more than three years into an invasion of Ukraine, so any government they'd want in Kyiv would be a pro-Putin one, and the US has been trying to broker a ceasefire.

Trump claimed he could sort things out within 24 hours, but more than two months he hasn't managed it and Russia recently rejected a US attempt at a peace deal by making more demands.

As for why Russia isn't on the very long list, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Fox News: "Well, Russia and Belarus we don’t trade with. Right? They are sanctioned."

Canada

The US neighbour to the north isn't on the list of countries with announced tariffs because it's already got tariffs lined up against it.

The current situation is that goods which aren't compliant with CUSMA (the Canada-US-Mexico Agreement) are hit with a 25 percent tariff, while non-compliant energy and potash form Canada face 10 percent tariffs.

Of course, Trump's 25 percent car tariff also applies to Canada, as does the 25 percent imposed on steel and aluminium, so there are still many things the US imports from Canada which it'll now have to pay more for.

Trump has complained that Canada and Mexico are not doing enough to stop migrants and shipments of the illegal drug fentanyl from getting into the US.

Mexico

As with Canada, Mexico is part of CUSMA alongside the US so there are some goods which won't face tariffs.

Mexico is in a very similar situation to Canada where the existing tariffs Trump has imposed will remain in place, but new sweeping tariffs on all goods will not be imposed.

At least not yet.

CUSMA is actually a Donald Trump invention from his first term in the White House, and is a more modern version of NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement.
