A dog owner made an adorable discovery after he set up a camera to get to the bottom of how his nine-week old puppy kept managing to escape from her locked puppy crate.

German Shepherd owner Michael Townsley, from Dundonald, in Belfast, was baffled after his repeated attempts at separation training for puppy Sasha always ended up with the pup breaking free.

Michael told Belfast Live he was sure he was securely locking the crate and yet as soon as his back was turned, little Sasha would be out and wandering around the kitchen.

It wasn't until he set up a camera that he spotted Sasha's older sister JoJo - 17 months - had been helping her to escape.

Speaking to Belfast Live, Mike said: "We have been training Sasha that it's OK when we leave the house, so we've been getting her used to being alone with JoJo for short periods of time.

"I would put Sasha in her crate and step outside for a few minutes at a time and built up the length of separation over a few days.

"But when we built it up to half an hour, every time myself of my wife came back in, Sasha was out of her crate and playing with JoJo."

Quite the mystery, eh? Mike told the paper, his wife Jenene initially thought he hadn't been securing the crate properly but that he 'knew' he was.

He continued: "Every time I peered in to them from the hall or outside she was safely in the crate. But the moment I stepped outside the front door I'd come back to find her free. I just couldn't work it out. I checked the crate and the locking mechanisms but it seemed fine.

"I kept getting shouted by Jenene for letting the pup roam free instead of training her but I insisted I'd locked up OK and I was determined to see what was going on."

Mike decided the only way to solve the mystery was to invest in a security camera and place it in the kitchen to capture what was happening when he wasn't around.

"I set up a security camera in the kitchen and let it record as I pretended to leave the house," he explained. "I stood outside the front door and waited.

"And what did we find when I cam back and watched the video? Only JoJo breaking Sasha out of her crate for fun and games - despite the big innocent face and wagging tail.

"She managed every time to move the two hinge locks up and backwards and pull open the gate to let Sasha out.

"JoJo is an amazing dog, the best girl ever but I was shocked when I realised what she was doing. She's so clever. I know it's naughty but I'm proud she's got the brains to do it. And I had great fun showing my wife I wasn't losing the plot after all.

"For the moment Sasha is not allowed in the kitchen when we are doing the separation training so she can't sabotage it - and no one is very pleased about that."
