Are you in need of a countryside staycation? Okay, silly question - how could you not be?

Did you know that somewhere, nestled away in the undulating hills of Glenleigham, Co. Donegal there is a stunning, rustic treehouse Airbnb that gives new meaning to the word cosy?

Located just a 15 minute drive from The Wild Atlantic Way, this tranquil oasis has been appropriately titled The Birdbox by its hosts Anna and Pete. The name takes inspiration from the fact this handcrafted treehouse is situated between the branches of beautiful mature oak and Scots pine trees - as opposed to the traumatising 2018 Netflix thriller starring Sandra Bullock, we assume!

Upon arrival at The Birdbox, you'll enter the property via 'a 30 metre walk along a stepped wooden walkway through a bank of mature trees' which even ends with a five metre long rope bridge bringing you to the treehouse's decking area for ultimate novelty factor.

Inside is equally as much of a feast for the eyes. Although it's naturally quite a compact space, Anna and Pete have truly made use of every last inch of square footage to create the ultimate woodland hideout.

A tiny woodburning stove provides heating for the treehouse to ensure maximum cosiness, whilst the mezzanine area holds a double bed making this the ideal spot for a couple seeking a romantic getaway or perhaps anyone who feels they need a digital detox after months spent staring into a screen at home.

Once you've settled into your cosy new abode, we highly recommend you turn your attention to what lies outside where you'll be faced with the most breath taking views of Glenveagh National Park.

If all that hasn't sold the experience to you, the reviews speak for themselves.

"I've lost count on how many people I've already shown this place to, it's one of those hidden secrets and [it's] right here in Ireland!" regaled one guest named Aideen.

"I loved how the place was decorated with interesting pieces throughout, but my favourite was the bedroom area, with the trees framed beautifully in the little windows. I was lucky enough to catch the moon through the trees from the porthole window at night, just stunning" another woman named Laura recalled.

The Airbnb description did include one note that felt a little triggering for those of us trying to look forward to life beyond lockdown as it notes: "The closed pubs are a five minute drive away." We can only hope this was written pre-lockdown and they in fact mean 'closest'.

As you can imagine, demand for this hidden gem is high so don't waste any time - you can book yourself into The Birdbox here for just €75.00 a night!
