Dad Bakes Pasty To Exact Weight And Size Of His Newborn Son

The gargantuan pasty weighed 2.8 kilos and contained 7,000 calories

Now, there are ways to celebrate the birth of a baby - have a dram of whisky, buy that day's paper, you get the idea - but one dad decided to go one utterly bizarre step further by baking a gigantic Cornish pasty that matched the exact size and weight of his newborn son.

Yep, that's definitely a new one.

Tim Fuge, 33, from Cornwall, was inspired by a photograph he'd seen that online in which another new father who had used a similar idea to illustrate the size of his child, but he decided to make his own instead.

In the end, it took Tim two and a half hours to create his pastry masterpiece and it weighs 2.8 kilograms - or 6.4lbs, if you're that way inclined - and took 19 hours to eat.

Surely he didn't have to eat it all in one sitting, though?

Ahead of his attempt, he made a practice pasty and researched his technique online. However, the hardest part, according to Tim, is finding a tray big enough to get the thing into the oven in the first place.

Apparently - and perhaps unsurprisingly - he was left 'absolutely stuffed' after scoffing down the 7,000 calorie treat.

So, inside the pasty - cooked to mark the arrival of his son Jowan - he put a load of onions, swede, potatoes, and beef skirt.

He explained: "I saw on Facebook that people are trying to make their own pasties as the bakeries and shops are shut.

"There was a picture of a bloke holding a pasty next to his baby to show how big it was. I thought: 'I can go one better'.

"I had never made a pasty before, apart from a couple of days before - but I had eaten plenty!

"I tried to work it all out. There's a Cornish Pasty Association website that gives you the ingredients.

"It came out bang up to how much the baby weighed when he was born.

"It was then in the oven for two-and-a-half hours while we went for our daily walk."

"I didn't have any breakfast that day and started eating it at lunch. I finished it the next day. It actually tasted really, really good.

"My wife was annoyed because it was nicer than hers! But I had to get her to do the crimping.

"I think it's about 7,000 calories - I tried to work that out from the ingredients."

Well, we've all got a bit of time on our hands at the minute, why the hell not?

Tim is a self employed lead worker, so he's got a whole load of time on his hands while unable to work during the lockdown.

He added: "I wouldn't have had time to do this if I was still working.

"It's been nice to spend some more time with the kids.

"I do like cooking, but I don't normally get a chance - I walk in the door and my wife has made it."

Perhaps there's a career change in the offing, provided Greggs want to branch out into gigantic pasties.
