A mum has been left shocked after her newly-born baby started to grow quite a lot of thick dark hair all over her body.

When Kei'Yonna Gumbs gave birth to her fourth child, Myla, the newborn baby already had a full head of hair, but also quite a bit of hair on her arms and legs, which is certainly unusual, to say the least.

Then after a couple of months, she started growing the hair all over her body, which is even more strange.

Now, the youngster has hair on her thighs and calves, as well as on her cheeks, upper arms, and forearms.

Kei'Yonna, from Texas, has never seen anything like this with her previous three children.

That said, she's not bothered about it, as she loves her youngest daughter regardless.

She said: "I was shocked when I noticed the hair coming in, but she's so gorgeous that it didn't matter, I will always love her.

"To all the mothers out there with daughter's like mine, embrace your baby.

"At birth she had a lot of hair but it was straight, It didn't start to curl up until she was around two and a half months.

"That's the same time I started to notice the hair on her legs and arms."

The amount of hair that babies have can vary wildly from child to child, with some being born with a full head of hair that later falls out and regrows, and some being born as bald as a coot.

Either way, the most important thing is that the baby is healthy and has loving parents, which it would seem that Myla certainly does.

Babies are born with the amount of hair follicles that they will have for their entire life, which is approximately five million.

As it happens, the hair follicles start developing whilst the baby is still in the womb, and they'll start growing hair after about 10 weeks of pregnancy, which is earlier than you might think.

This early hair is called lanugo, and it usually disappears between the 36 and 40 week point of gestation.

That's why babies that are born prematurely are more likely to have a full head of hair than those that go over term.

Regardless, that baby hair is pretty much guaranteed to have fallen out by the time they get to about four months old.
