Following the sad news that Friends star James Michael Tyler (aka Gunther) has passed away, fans want to know if he was married or had any children.

James Michael Tyler was born in Mississippi on 28th May 1962 and he has Friends to thank for his fame and fortune.

Who was James Michael Tyler's wife?

Tyler was married to production assistant Jennifer Carno from 2017 until his death in 2021. He was previously married to Barbara Chadsey between 1995-2014.

Little is known about Tyler's wife and ex-wife. Although he and Chadsey were married for almost two decades, they actually separated in 2003 and filed for divorce in 2014, citing "irreconcilable differences" as the cause of the split.

It's not clear whether Chadsey ever remarried or even what she does for a career, as she's kept her private life out of the spotlight since splitting with the Friends star.

Did James Michael Tyler have children?

Tyler didn't have any children with his first or second wife.

Tyler did come from a large family himself though; he was the youngest of five children.

Tyler tragically lost both of his parents when he was growing up. He lost his father at the age of ten and a year later, his mother died. Following this, Tyler moved in with his sister in Anderson, South Carolina.

In 1988, Tyler moved to LA to be a production assistant on the film Fat Man And Little Boy and then became an assistant film editor.

Between 1994-2004, Tyler played Gunther on Friends, which is the role he's best known for.

He made an appearance via Zoom at Friends: The Reunion in May 2021 and in June, he announced that he had prostate cancer.

Tyler lost his battle with the disease in October 2021. His death comes just a couple of months after another 90s sitcom legend, Willie Garson, lost his battle with cancer. Garson was known for his role in Sex and the City, but he also made a cameo appearance on Friends.

Tributes have poured in from Tyler's Friends co-stars, friends, family and fans all over the world.

"Friends would not have been the same without you. Thank you for the laughter you brought to the show and to all of our lives. You will be so missed," said Jennifer Aniston, who played Rachel on the show, who Gunther had a secret crush on.Featured Image Credit: PA
