Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt star in the new Disney film adaptation of Jungle Cruise, which comes out at the end of the month.

The film has been in the making since 2017, with The Rock adamant that the only co-star he wanted in this movie was Blunt (Devil Wears Prada, A Quiet Place), he told The Hollywood Reporter.

The movie is based on the 65-year-old riverboat cruise theme park ride and it's hoped it'll garner the success that the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, another ride-inspired movie, did.

The fantasy-adventure film is set in the early 20th century, with Blunt playing the pants-wearing intrepid female explorer Dr Lily Houghton, and Johnson playing the doctor's steamboat captain, Frank Wolff. Dr Houghton hires Wolff to navigate her steamboat through the jungle river on her quest to find the Tree of Life, which she believes to hold powerful healing properties. But it's not going to be easy to get there - as Wolff puts it "everything out there wants to kill you."

The chemistry between the two leads is as important as the plot itself, the film's producer Jaume Collet-Serra told THR, and there's plenty of banter between the two characters; for instance, one of Wolff's nicknames for Blunt's character is "pants."

Jungle Cruise cast

Alongside Blunt and Johnson, this movie hasn't skimped on the supporting roles.

Comedian Jack Whitehall plays MacGregor Houghton, Lily's brother in-tow who accompanies her on the voyage through the jungle.

Jesse Plemons (Black Mirror, Judas and the Black Messiah) will play Prince Joachim, the villainous German aristocrat leading a military expedition through the jungle in the race to find the Tree of Life. He tries with several failed attempts to stop Dr Houghton.

Edgar Remirez (American Crime Story, A Very English Scandal) will play Aguirre, a deadly mercenary hired to guide a rival expedition for the Tree of Life.

Other cast members of note are:

  • Paul Giamatti (American Splendor, Sideways) as Nilo, the harbourmaster for where Wolff docks his boat
  • Veronica Falcón (Queen of the South) as Trader Sam, a female version of the character from the ride
  • Sulem Calderon (Nona, One of the Good Ones) as Quila
  • Andy Nyman (Judy, Death at a Funeral) as Sir James Hobbs-Coddington
  • Raphael Alejandro (Once Upon a Time) as Zaqueu
  • Simone Lockhart (Sweet Magnolias, Manhunt: Unabomber) as Anna

So remember to pencil in 30th July to watch what's sure to be another great Disney movie.
