The Witcher Showrunner Gets Real About The Possibility Of Season 3

As The Witcher season 2 gets a release date for December, fans are already eager to know if there'll be a season three.

A showrunner for Netflix's The Witcher has shone a light on what's happening with season three, as fans prepare for season two to land in December this year.

While some reports have said writing for season three of the sci-fi fantasy series has begun, others are skeptical about a third season, including one of the showrunners, Lauren Hissrich.

"There has been no formal renewal" of The Witcher, she said at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour.

"In fact, right now my focus is on season two. I mean, we have this airdate now, we're going to launch on December 17th. There is still a lot of work to be done in post-production. So I'm back and forth between Los Angeles and London completing that, and that is just where all of our focus is right now, because we need a great season two if we have a hope of having a season three," she explained.

Season one of the show, which stars Henry Cavil, brought in colossal figures (76 million viewers) and earned it the title of most-popular series on Netflix in 2019.

Despite the success and the scope for more series to be based on Andrzej Sapowski's books (of which there are many to choose from), Netflix does have a reputation for pulling the plug on shows after a couple of seasons due to production costs rising. Just look at Henry Cavil's huge popularity, which will command a paycheck to reflect that. And despite his huge appreciation for the series, the money side of things is what a third season could boil down to.

But there is hope for a third season yet. In October 2020, a The Witcher fan site reported that a third season of The Witcher had appeared on the Writers Guild of America's website. This is the biggest clue yet that Netflix has already greenlit the third season before the second has aired.

Other sources close to the show have told Redanian Intelligence that writing has started for the third season.

And if you wanted more evidence that the third season is in the making, back in December, the NetflixGeekd Twitter account tweeted a photo of what looks to be the (spoiler warning) final page of the script for season two and said:

"This page from the Witcher Season 2 script shows the next season isn't holding back." The script suggests a big cliffhanger, the kind you'd only plan if you already knew another season was confirmed.
