Fans are convinced Adam Sandler’s performance in his upcoming Netflix film will finally land him an Academy Award after the trailer dropped yesterday (10 May). Watch it below:

Film buffs’ jaws hit the floor a couple of years ago when Sandler’s riveting performance in 2019’s Uncut Gems failed to bag him an Oscar nod, but it looks as though it might finally be Sandler’s time.

Hustle will be available to stream from June, and the Jeremiah Zagar-directed, Lebron James-produced movie sees Sandler play a washed-up NBA scout looking for his ticket back to the big league.

During a trip to Spain, Stanley Beren (Sandler) sets his sights on ball player Bo Cruz (portrayed by real life Utah Jazz forward Juancho Hernangómez), but before the pair can make it big in the NBA, they must overcome their own personal demons.

Queen Latifah, Heidi Gardner and Ben Foster also star in the film, which has been causing a stir on social media since the trailer’s release.

Twitter was ablaze with praise for Sandler, and calls for his first Oscar nomination weren't in short supply.

One Twitter user wrote: “Adam Sandler is going for the Oscar he deserves,” while a second echoed: “Adam Sandler looks like he's trying to bag an Oscar, and I am here for it.”

A third added: “I’m glad that Adam Sandler has been taking more serious roles. He wants that Oscar!”

A fourth gushed: “See, THIS is what I want to see out of Adam Sandler. No more mindless comedies. He’s at the point in his career where he should have Oscar nominations.

"Honestly, he should have gotten one for Uncut Gems. When he goes serious, he goes hard."

Sandler has previously joked about the fact he’s never scored an Oscar nod, even threatening to make a bad film if he didn't make the nominations list for his Uncut Gems performance.

Back in December 2019, Sandler appeared on The Howard Stern Show and discussed the likelihood of him receiving a career-first Oscar nomination for his starring role in Uncut Gems.

He jokingly told Stern: "If I don't get it, I'm going to f**king come back and do one again that is so bad on purpose just to make you all pay. That's how I get them."

Not long after Sandler made the comment, the trailer for his 2020 film Hubie Halloween dropped and fans were convinced the movie was Sandler’s revenge.

Sharing a headline reporting on Sandler’s comments on The Howard Stern Show, alongside the Hubie Halloween trailer, one person quipped: "It's happening."
