Ana de Armas says the ghost of Marilyn Monroe was present as she filmed Blonde

Ana de Armas believes Marilyn Monroe's ghost was with her on set while she was filming biopic Blonde.

Blonde star Ana de Armas has said she felt the presence of Marilyn Monroe's ghost on the set of the movie.

Based off a novel of the same name, Blonde will portray the legendary actor Marilyn Monroe as her life away from the big screen becomes a stark contrast to her glamourous appearance in cinema.

The Netflix movie stars de Armas in the lead role alongside Adrien Brody, Bobby Cannavale and Julianne Nicholson as it charts Marilyn's suffering from abuse, exploitation and drug addiction while she was the most famous woman in the world.

When making a movie like this it can be hard to know what the subject would have thought of it, though de Armas has said she thinks Monroe would have approved and suggested that there was 'something in the air' at times during production.

Speaking at a press conference alongside her co-stars for the movie, de Armas said there were times during production where she felt like she could feel the ghost of Marilyn Monroe with her.

The star explained that the feeling was most strong when she was inhabiting the character in places she'd really been, and thought the movie would have got Monroe's approval.

She said: "She was happy but she would also throw things off the walls at times and get mad when she didn't like something.

"Being in the same places that she was, filming in her house, it just felt there was a very strong sensation, there was something in the air."

"I think she was approving of what we were doing, maybe this sounds very mystical or something but I think it's true, we all felt it."

Blonde has been a controversial production over the way it's portrayed the legendary actor, as the movie is based off a fictionalised account of Marilyn Monroe's life.

The movie has promised to 'boldly reimagine the life of one of Hollywood’s most enduring icons', which is a signal to audiences that what they see on screen is not going to be exactly what happened.

It has also been hit with an 'adults only' rating, though de Armas said she 'didn't understand' why that was the case and said there were plenty of other movies and TV shows that were more explicit.

Marilyn Monroe's estate has also defended the star from criticism over her accent, saying she 'was a great casting choice' to bring one of cinema's most iconic figures to life.

Blonde will release on Netflix on 28 September.
