Aubrey Plaza says she would be keen on playing Lara Croft in a new movie.

The actor was recently on the cover of Moviemaker magazine, where she was snapped wearing a greyish vest and holding a bag with a leather strap over her shoulder.

Speaking about the cover on a recent edition of The Tonight Show, the 38-year-old revealed that one of her mates messaged her to tell her she was a dead ringer for the iconic video game character.

Plaza told Fallon: "My friend, Edgar Wright, actually saw that and texted me and said, 'You’re the new Lara Croft? You’re the new Tomb Raider?'… And I was like, 'No, Edgar, that’s my movie Emily the Criminal'.

"He genuinely thought I was cast as the new Tomb Raider."

Now, while it might seem a bit surprising to have the Parks and Recs star in the conversation to take on the role, it could yet happen.

The star of the 2018 flick Tomb Raider, Alicia Vikander, has previously said that she won't be returning to the character, so there's an opening.

And when asked about the topic by Newsweek, Plaza said she would certainly be keen if the opportunity arose in the future.

She said: "Look, I have no idea what the future holds for me, but I love it.

"It was so funny when he texted me that because I didn’t realise how strikingly similar those photos are. Emily is carrying a purse strap and Lara Croft has a gun holster, those are very different. But it’s very weird and totally accidental, but I’ll take it."

Adding: "I love all kinds of movies. I would love it if somehow that turned into a real thing, but who knows, I have no idea. That’s an iconic character. She’s the original badass."

But that will be a way off yet if it does come to pass.

Her new release, Emily the Criminal, sees Plaza play a down-on-her-luck student, who is saddled with debt and struggling to make ends meet.

However, thriller takes a turn when she joins a gang of crooks as a 'dummy shopper', buying stuff with stolen credit cards.

So far, it's been met with rave reviews, scoring a very impressive 94 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Praising the film, one critic said: "Emily the Criminal has an awfully cute title for a movie so bubbling over with rage."

"Filmmaker Ford’s Emily screenplay makes good use of the wickedness lurking just beneath the surface of Plaza’s arguably comedic bad-girl persona," wrote another.

While a third commented: "Aubrey Plaza delivers a powerful performance. She transitions slowly over the course of the film, leaning in to own her presence, power, and sexuality as her time on screen mounts."
