Butterbean's legendary fight with Johnny Knoxville left the Jackass star's head bleeding

Butterbean's legendary fight with Johnny Knoxville left the Jackass star's head bleeding

He was knocked out in seconds

Johnny Knoxville and the rest of his rag-tag crew of adrenaline junkie friends carved out a whole career for themselves performing some of the most outlandish stunts all for our viewing pleasure.

From rollerskating in a buffalo pen and the iconic 'Rent-a-Car Crash-Up Derby' to the hilarious 'Butt X-Ray' bit and a whole load of stomach-churning toilet humour - it's clear Knoxville et all really pushed the limits of humanity back in their hay days.

Arguably, one of the best stunts saw former professional boxer Butterbean leaving Knoxville completely concussed with a bleeding head.

Way back in 2002, Knoxville was joined by the likes of Steve-O, Bam Margera, the late Ryan Dunn, Chris Pontius, Dave England, Danger Ahren, Preston Lacy and - of course - Wee Man for Jackass: The Movie.

The misfit crew of stuntmen, skateboarders and all-around lunatics stunned the world as they pranked, embarrassed and down-right tortured each other in the name of a good laugh.

And 'Department Store Boxing' was of no exception.

The scene took place in, you guessed it, a department store in Japan.

Teaming up with Eric 'Butterbean' Esch, once a strong competitor on the 'Toughman' circuit famed for his impressive victories via KO, it was clear Knoxville didn't stand a chance.

The bit sees the pair doing a ring walk into the shop with a woman or 'ring girl' walking round holding up a 'Round One' placard.

Viewers would later find out there would be no need for a second considering the whole ordeal was a one and done type of situation.

The not-so-dynamic duo squared up in the middle of the shop floor as baffled shoppers looked on - partly out of confusion but mostly out of sheer curiosity.

It didn't take long for things to heat up as Butterbean pretty much pummelled the Jackass star knocking him to the floor in just a matter of seconds.

Loomis Fall, the pretend referee, looks on without intervening as Butterbean - now pumped as ever - tells Knoxville 'one more time' gesturing for the daredevil to 'hit him one time at least'.

Knoxville then lands Butterbean a singular blow to the jaw saying 'there you go' and impressively managed to sneak in two more punches before it all went south.

With total ease, Butterbean proceeded to knock out Knoxville cold and left him unconscious on the floor.

While the 'fight' itself was over just about as quickly as one would expect, it's clear the real entertainment came with Knoxville's side-splitting reaction to the situation.

As Butterbean looks around, visibly concerned over the state of his ringside opponent who was being tended to by a medical professional, Knoxville delivered one of his best lines throughout the entire franchise.

Still on the floor and with a dazed look in his eyes and a bleeding head to match, he asked: "Is Butterbean okay?" at which point everyone burst out laughing and the sportsman was crowned the champion.

In an interview with GQ last year, the stuntman explained: "In the footage you can see me snoring but my doctor told me, 'That's you just trying to swallow your tongue'.

"I knew I had to try and make it funny because it could be borderline dark in those situations so I luckily had enough wherewithal to come up with the line."

A quick visit to the hospital found that Knoxville had a 'big gash' in his head with the doctor stitching him up and stating: "You're going be not feeling great over the next 24 hours."

I'd say that was an understatement.

In typical Knoxville fashion, he replied: "You'll probably see me in two or three days."

Well, it wasn't the first Jackass injury on set and it was certainly far from the last.
