An update on his Instagram page said: "Joey is home recovering. He has a severe head injury and some chest trauma.

"He is going to be dark on social media for a couple days while recovering. Thank you for all the well wishes and positive vibes. Keep them coming! We'll be reading them to him to help him get better!"

His wife Nancy told TMZ he had been out for a stroll when a Porsche skidded across the road and hit him, sending the actor flying a couple of feet backwards into a fence. Along with a gash on his head, Pantoliano also suffered injuries to his left leg and shoulder.

She also said the Porsche had been t-boned by another car.

Nancy explained emergency services arrived and took Pantoliano to hospital. However, thankfully he was later discharged and is now recovering at home.

Pantoliano had shared a video on Instagram on Friday, thought to have been taken shortly before the incident, in which he and his family were heading out for a stroll.

Showing off a rainbow, he said in the clip: "Look at that rainbow. How do you like that beauty?"

Panning round to his family, he added: "And all my little rainbows ahead of me!"

After news broke of Pantoliano's injury, well wishes came flooding in from fans and fellow celebs alike.

His Bad Boys co-star Martin Lawrence commented on the actor's latest Instagram update: "Praying for a speedy recovery brotha! Much love."

Michael Gandolfini, the son of late Sopranos star James Gandolfini, also wrote: "Oh good, was worried! Feel better!!"
