Rapper Bow Wow has defended himself after putting on a performance at a packed-out nightclub despite the increase in coronavirus cases in the US.

The 33-year-old performed at an event at Cle in Houston, Texas on Friday (15 January) - but was hit with a backlash after photos of the concert were shared online showing just a handful of partygoers wearing masks and very little social distancing going on.

Responding to footage of the gig shared online one person wrote: "Going to see Bow Wow in a pandemic, we are stuck in this for a long time. Selfish idiots."

Another added: "Woooooowwwwwww... how are we ever gonna live through this pandemic if people keep doing this?"

Twitter

Someone else posted: "I would NEVER risk my life for Lil Bow Wow...

"Also, do we have NO COVID restrictions in H-Town?

"There are some awful ways to die, but death by Bow Wow has to be up there. Do better people."

Even Scrubs star Zack Braff joined in, sharing the clip and writing: "I thought about it and have decided I'm not willing to die for Bow Wow."

Bow Wow, real name Shad Moss, later attempted to defend himself on Twitter in a series of now-deleted tweets, Metro reports.

According to the news outlet, Bow Wow responded to one angry follower to say: "Man I been hosting parties all last year. I wore my mask in the club. I can't host with that thing on."

In another deleted tweet, he explained he wore a mask right 'up until I got on the mic' adding: "That simple. Keep hand sanitizer on me at all times.

"Don't want folks thinking I don't care ya know."

Texas, where the gig took place, has had more than two million cases of Covid-19 and more than 32,000 have died from the virus.

LADbible has contacted the Clé nightclub in Houston for a comment.

Bow Wow isn't the only celebrity to come under fire for putting on a gig during the pandemic.

Trey Songz was hit with a similar backlash after he performed in Ohio to around 500 people in December last year.

Speaking at the time, Ohio Investigative Unit enforcement commander Eric Wolf told WCMH: "Basically, it was just a concert environment.

"If you had taken that event and put it in 2019, it would have been pretty much the same concert, same event, that was taking place last night."
