Cameron Diaz has opened up about her decision to retire from acting.

The 48-year-old starred in a slew of hit Hollywood movies including There's Something About Mary, The Mask and Charlie's Angels - then in 2018 she announced she was quitting acting and has kept a pretty low profile ever since.

In a recent, and rare, interview, Diaz revealed that she made the decision so she could concentrate on other parts of her life.

Speaking to actor Kevin Hart on his talk show, Hart to Heart, she explained: "When you do something at a really high level for a long period of time, when you're the person that is delivering one thing, you're the person on the screen, all parts of you that isn't that has to sort of be handed off to other people."

She went on to say there were many other aspects of her life, including everything from finance to her home, that she 'wasn't touching' or 'wasn't managing'.

The star added: "It's fun to do, I love acting. I could go forever. I literally feel like I have unlimited energy and inertia.

"I just looked around and there were so many parts of my life that I wasn't touching and that I wasn't managing, and I couldn't really manage, because everything was so massive."

Diaz said this feeling prompted her to reassess her life.

"For me, I just really wanted to make my life manageable by me," she said.

"My routine in a day is literally what I can manage to do by myself.

"It's the best feeling, I feel whole."

Since her last role in 2014's Annie, Diaz married husband Benji Madden and welcomed daughter Raddix in 2019.

Diaz said stepping away from the limelight gave her more time to concentrate on the other parts of her life, including starting a family.

She said: "I met my husband, we started a family, all the things I didn't have time for before, and not just the time for but didn't have the space to make the decisions, the right decision for me at the time."

Although she's not been seen on screen, Diaz has managed to keep herself busy since retiring from acting.

She's penned a couple of books - The Body Book: Feed, Move, Understand and Love Your Amazing Body in 2013 and The Longevity Book: The Science of Aging, the Biology of Strength, and the Privilege of Time in 2016.

She also launched an organic wine brand called Avaline.
