Tom Hardy 'Could Be The Next Wolverine'

Tom Hardy is the bookies favourite to take on the iconic role, having already earnt his stripes in the superhero world.

Now that Hugh Jackman's decided to hang up his retractable claws, we've been left wondering who could take over the iconic role of Wolverine. Sure it's a tough act to follow, because fans really did love Hugh as the hairy anti-hero - but someone's got to do it, right?

Since the news broke that Hugh's time was up - and the bombshell that Disney has now bought Fox - speculation has grown about who will be his successor in the role. But there's one clear favourite, and that's Tom Hardy - who Ladbrokes has said is a 3/1 favourite to be the next star to taken on Wolverine.

"Hardy ticks all the boxes as far as we're concerned," Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes told LADbible.

"Fans would love to see him don the famous Wolverine facial fuzz."

Seems she's right, as other people can totally see it happening, too - with one Twitter user even sharing some incredible fan art of the re-imagined Wolverine.

Hardy has already shown he can handle the big budget superhero flicks. Not only has be shown his worth as baddie Bane in Batman film The Dark Knight Rises, he's also now been cast in Sony's Venom. On top of that, other seriously badass roles include his turn as Alfie Solomons in Peaky Blinders - a performance that was so good that we even think he deserves his own spin-off series (if he's not too busy with Wolverine, that is).

The release of Logan earlier this year marked the last time Hugh Jackman would play the part of Wolverine, the role he'd portrayed for 17 years across nine movies. Now that's devotion.

In an interview with Variety magazine, Jackman got all misty-eyed about leaving the character behind, having grown into the role over the years and had finally found the heart and soul of it.

"I wish I'd started playing him like that 17 years ago," Jackman told the mag.

"So there's some sense of missed opportunity, but when I saw Logan, I sat there and I did have tears in my eyes. The main feeling I had was: 'There, that's the character. I feel like I've done it now'. And I was calm and at peace, but I'm going to miss that guy."

Well, Tom, what do you reckon?
