Writing about his father's death in 1992, he said: "I got a call from my Mom. 'Your dad died.' My knees buckled. I couldn't believe it.

"He was my dad. Nobody or nothing could kill him. Except mom. He'd always told me and my brothers, 'Boys, when I go, I'm gonna be makin' love to your mother.'

"And that's what happened. He had a heart attack when he climaxed."

His dad was just 63 when he died, while McConaughey was in his early 20s.

James and McConaughey's mum Kay had a tumultuous relationship - they divorced each other twice and got married three times.

Speaking to People about their relationship, he said: "They were, at times, violent.

"As I say in the book, that is how they communicated. They were divorced twice, married three times, I mean, yeah, it was like the Pacific Ocean in a storm."

"I think I do a pretty good job trying to maintain and care for each relationship in my family, well enough, so it doesn't get to a point where I'm exacerbated or have to raise my voice."

Earlier this year, the Hollywood star revealed that he had attempted to play matchmaker with his mum Kay and Hugh Grant's dad James Grant.

Grant and McConaughey starred alongside each other in The Gentlemen, where it appeared to dawn on McConaughey that the their two widowed parents could be a good match.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, McConaughey said: "His father's 91, my mother's 88. Yeah, why not?

"Next week, they're supposed to meet, and we probably won't see them for the rest of the night."

While Grant joked that their date could be 'red hot'.

Greenlights is due to be released on Tuesday 20 October.
