Outer Banks star Madelyn Cline has opened up about her real-life relationship with Chase Stokes and the one question she asked him after breaking up.
Cline continued to play Sarah Cameron, while Chase Stokes starred as John B Routledge, as their on-screen relationship continued after their separation in 2021.
While the awkwardness must have been off the charts, Cline reveals that it got to the point where both actors wanted to just be happy again.
“There were moments when it was difficult, absolutely,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.

“But once the dust kind of settled, we were able to just revert to the friendship that we always had. At some point, you look at each other and you’re like, ‘Are you ready to stop being miserable? Because I’m ready’.”
Cline and Stokes first met while auditioning for the Netflix series in 2019 and soon later began dating, publicly confirming their relationship in June 2020.

A year later, however, the couple separated and continued playing romantic partners on Outer Banks until the fifth and final season, which finally dropped on Netflix on 20 August 2026.
And it turns out that Stokes felt the same way, telling Entertainment Weekly in 2023: "Mads and I have been working together now for 30 episodes, and we made a promise to each other before we even started dating that the work was always going to come first.
"And that no matter what happens in our personal lives, and the ways that life sometimes takes you in different directions, that we're always going to honor the work. That stayed 100 percent truthful this season."

Cline added that they’ve ‘always shown up for each other when it comes to work and this show’.
"We had a working relationship before we had a personal relationship, and our job from day one has always been to leave the show better than we found it," she said to the outlet.
"I'm really, really happy and I'm very proud of the work this season, and I'm incredibly grateful for my co-stars and their professionalism and just how talented each and every one of them are."

In season five of Outer Banks, Sarah and John are expecting a baby after she discovered she was pregnant during season four.
Following JJ’s death, John becomes more aware that his dangerous lifestyle now affects more than just himself.
“He’s accepting the fact that he is a soon-to-be father and that he has responsibilities. The 16-year-old who was lying to DCS about staying with his uncle is now starting to really realize the ramifications and the repercussions of his actions,” he tells Tudum.
The likes of Kiara (played by Madison Bailey), Pope (played by Jonathan Daviss) and Cleo (played by Carlacia Grant) seek justice and attempt to hunt down his killer, Chandler Groff (played by J. Anthony Crane).
Season five of Outer Banks is available to watch on Netflix now.
