Matthew McConaughey admits what he told his mum after 'naked bongo' arrest

Matthew McConaughey is the type of man you'd expect to be free and unapologetically wild, but his 'naked bongo' arrest is a story you'd still be shocked to hear as he reveals how his mum reacted to the news.

The actor is arguably one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, but also someone who isn't afraid to get real about life and love.

Recently, he released a series of thoughts and prayers in the form of a book, spoke about banning his kids from their bed, and downsizing so he and his wife are forced to be close at night.

But now, he's traveling down memory lane in an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused with Josh Horowitz podcast.

The interview, which went live today (13 August), reveals to moment McConaughey's mother found out he was down in a cell because he was caught playing the bongo whilst naked.

"Naked bongo drumming. Come on. Iconic," said the host, to which the actor revealed he had 'framed that ticket' he got for the arrest.

According to his memoir, he was naked, playing the bongos and high on marijuana when he was arrested in his home by multiple police officers in 1999.

The Oscar winner was apprehended for 'disturbing the peace', in which he wrote of it in Greenlights.

He explained 'a jam session' led him to open up a window to 'smoke a bowl' while listening to 'the beautiful African melodic beats of Henri Dikongué play through my home speakers.'

“What I didn’t know was that while I was banging away in my bliss, two Austin policemen also thought it was time to barge into my house unannounced, wrestle me to the ground with nightsticks, handcuff me and pin me to the floor,” McConaughey wrote of the night.

He told Horowitz that he was 'playing loud' and caught the attention of his neighbour who had 'just moved into town, mind you.'

He said this led to the neighbourhood becoming upset with them, as calling the cops over noise was frowned upon.

But when asked if there was any humour in the incident, he revealed that came from his mother.

He said: "I remember everything was fun and games. Then I woke up in the morning after nine hours in the jail and started to have the blues because I had gotten caught and I was in a jail and I was like, I was not raised to be in a jail."

He explained he used to be sat down and spoken to by his parents for getting caught, not for doing the crime itself.

"I had no problem with what I did," he said, "and I don't think my mom and dad got any problem with what I did, but I got caught."

The actor shared that his one phone call was to his mother, and 'told her what happened' and her first words were scathing about the police who arrested him, telling him to continue with his naked bongo and 'funny weed' shenanigans, and even admitting that's she's 'done that before', too.

After he was released, it turned out his arrest made both local and national news, and he recalled being handed a t-shirt 'that had already been made that night that said "bongo naked" with a character picture of me running across naked and bongos'.
