Rick Moranis returns to acting 30 years after tragic disappearance from Hollywood

Moranis is returning for the Spaceballs sequel, with the title having been officially announced

30 years on from quitting Hollywood Rick Moranis is back, starring in the newly named sequel Spaceballs: The New One.

Moranis is not just a regular celebrity but a legend of Hollywood, having starred in films such as Ghostbusters, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Little Shop of Horrors, and the original Spaceballs.

The American actor’s return was confirmed earlier this year, with the Spaceballs sequel’s title being announced at CinemaCon this week with a special video from Mel Brooks.

Moranis is returning as Dark Helmet, with his face covered for most of the trailer shown at CinemaCon

Many however will not know the tragic reason behind Moranis’ disappearance from Hollywood, and temporary retirement from acting.

Moranis left Hollywood to look after his children for a heartbreaking reason

Moranis and his wife Anne Moranis had two children, Rachel and Mitchell, before Anne tragically passed away. Anne was a costume designer and died in 1991 due to cancer.

Speaking to USA Today in 2005, he spoke about how he kept trying to act in films until 1997,

He said: “I’m a single parent, and I just found that it was too difficult to manage raising my kids and doing the traveling involved in making movies.

“So I took a little bit of a break. And the little bit of a break turned into a longer break, and then I found that I really didn’t miss it.”

Moranis revealed why he turned down chance to return for Ghostbusters reboot with co-stars

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in 2015, he stated he was invited back for the all-female Ghostbusters by Paul Feig which had cameos from Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, and Sigourney Weaver.

He said he ‘wished them well’ but added: “I hope it’s terrific. But it just makes no sense to me. Why would I do just one day of shooting on something I did 30 years ago?”

Speaking about whether he’d return to acting Moranis said: “I’m interested in anything that I would find interesting. I still get the occasional query about a film or television role… as soon as one comes along that piques my interest, I’ll probably do it.”

The Ghostbusters actor did not regret giving up his acting career to look after his kids

Moranis added: “I was working with really interesting people, wonderful people. I went from that to being at home with a couple of little kids, which is a very different lifestyle.

“But it was important to me. I have absolutely no regrets whatsoever. My life is wonderful. People are very nice when they see me.

“They ask me, ‘How come they don’t make movies like they used to?’ We were governed by a certain kind of taste at that time, and there were places we wouldn’t go with language and bodily fluids and functions. I think that’s what they’re nostalgic for.”

He finally added: “But I’m happy with the things I said yes to, and I’m very happy with the many things I’ve said no to. Yes, I am picky, and I’ll continue to be picky. Picky has worked for me.”

Clearly returning for the sequel Spaceballs was enough to entreat him out of retirement now his kids are all grown up, because Moranis will return just over a year from now, 23 April 2027.
