Testosterone replacement explained as Robbie Williams admitted to having 'sexless marriage' after coming off it

Robbie Williams had been open about having testosterone to help with his mental health

A '90s boyband and pop legend, it’s fair to say Robbie Williams has been a bit of a sex icon over the years for many (OK, let’s be honest, for many mums).

But he previously shocked fans with the revelation that he had a ‘sexless marriage’.

Robbie has been married to Ayda Field since 2010, sharing four kids together and often being open about aspects of their relationship.

And in April 2023, the pair said they are ‘on the same page’ when it comes to intimacy as they no longer have sex as much as they did before marriage.

This admission came as the ‘Rock DJ’ singer said his libido dropped after he stopped taking testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) to treat his depression.

Robbie used TRT to address low levels as well as to improve his general health and well-being, including his mental health and confidence.

TRT is often used when hypogonadism occurs. This is the medical term for testosterone deficiency. It can happen in men of any age, but there is a progressive decline in levels as men get older.

Symptoms of low testosterone can include fatigue, depression, anxiety, low libido, erectile dysfunction, poor concentration or memory and needing to shave less often.

TRT is available on the NHS once a blood test has been done to measure the total testosterone levels.

Assistant professor of urology at the University of California San Diego’s Men’s Health Center, Darshan Patel told Men’s Health: “Testosterone therapy supplements or replaces an important hormone produced naturally by your body in those men with testosterone deficiency.”

There is a number of forms of TRT available including the likes of injectables, topical gels, pills and nasal sprays.

During the 2023 interview, the singer quipped that ‘everyone knows there’s no sex after marriage’.

He then went on to add: “But the sex we had when I was on testosterone was incredible; it was all the time. We were insatiable.

"It goes to show how into each other we really are, though, because when I was on it, we couldn’t take our hands off each other.”

Robbie said he ‘missed that’.

“That was a fun period. Sometimes now, though, Ayda will turn to me on the sofa and say, 'We should do sex,' and I’m sitting there eating a tangerine and just sort of shrug. So, ya know, sometimes we try,” he added.

Ayda Field’s comments

During the joint interview, Ayda said she believes people ‘confuse sex for intimacy’.

“We are always cuddling and kissing, holding hands, and touching each other when we are just watching TV on the sofa, or a movie, or whatever,” she said.

“Intimacy is the important, meaningful side of love. I have friends who feel obliged to have sex with their husbands and that must be awful.

“Me and Rob are on the same page. We are happy.”
