Fans were left absolutely godsmacked by Sarah Lancashire's real accent after her latest performance in Netflix's Black Doves.

Black Doves is Netflix's latest spy thriller offering and stars Keira Knightley, Ben Whishaw and, of course, Sarah Lancashire.

After her stunning portrayal in fan favourite crime drama Happy Valley, every time Lancashire speaks and a Yorkshire accent doesn't come out, people get taken aback.

This isn't the first time fans were shook by hearing her speak as when she took to the stage to accept her BAFTA for the Yorkshire-based show that propelled her fame, people had a lot to say.

One viewer took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their surprise, writing: "Why is Sarah Lancashire putting on that strange accent?"

Another echoed the sentiment, adding: "Always forget Sarah Lancashire is actually posh..."

Her polished and refined tone was a stark contrast to the gravelly Yorkshire drawl fans have come to know and love on Happy Valley. It even left one fan describing it as a 'jump scare.'

"Sarah Lancashire not speaking with that thick Yorkshire accent somehow feels wrong," someone else chimed in, while another admitted: "I never knew Sarah Lancashire talked like that in real life!!!"

It's safe to say her natural voice caught viewers off guard, but there was no confusion when it came to celebrating her well-deserved win.

The Happy Valley star picked up the prestigious award for Best Leading Actress at a ceremony in July in London, earning her yet another accolade for her unforgettable performance as Catherine Cawood.

Fans of the actor flooded social media with praise and excitement over her recognition.

One fan posted: "I was ready to riot if Sarah Lancashire hadn't won that! Thank God, more than deserved."

Another wrote: "The moment of joy we've all been waiting for. Seeing Sarah Lancashire crowned Leading Actress. #BAFTATVAwards #HappyValley What a SUPERB performance, what a SUPERB production, cast and crew. What GREAT writing."

Fans also paid tribute to the incredible team behind Happy Valley, with one gushing: "Sarah Lancashire - one of my all-time favourite actresses! Such talent! She never fails to blow me away - no matter the part! Pair her with Sally Wainwright's writing and it's off the scale! Bravo."

Lancashire, who hails from Oldham in Greater Manchester, first stepped into the role of Catherine Cawood when the series premiered in 2014. The critically acclaimed drama quickly became a fan favourite, winning the BAFTA TV award for Best Drama Series for its first two seasons in 2014 and 2016.

After a lengthy hiatus, the show's much-anticipated third season arrived in 2023, once again reuniting Lancashire with co-star James Norton.

The final season was lauded by fans and critics alike, solidifying Happy Valley as one of the greatest British dramas of recent years.

Despite the surprise at her real-life accent, one thing is certain: Sarah Lancashire's talent knows no bounds.
