Demisexuality explained in full after I'm A Celeb's Tulisa spoke out about being celibate for three years

The star opened up about her feelings last night in the I'm A Celeb jungle

Keeping it very candid and honest in camp, Tulisa Contostavlos opened up about feeling she is demisexual and addressed her celibacy during I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! last night (19 November).

The 36-year-old has been praised for giving demisexuality mainstream representation as other ITV viewers quickly searched to understand what it actually means.

Tulisa was discussing dating with Dean McCullough as she said she ‘hated’ using apps and described her body as her ‘temple’ that she isn’t just going to let anyone ‘enter’.

What did Tulisa say?

As the I’m A Celeb campmates discussed their dating and relationship habits, the former The X Factor judge opened up: “I feel like I’m demisexual, I need to have a really close emotional bond with someone.”

She added: “I’m a slow, slow burner, I’ve been celibate for over three years.”

And when McCullough asked her what it’s like to go without sex, Tulisa explained: “I’m not an overly sexualised person.

“For me, it’s all about the connection and the emotions that I feel with someone and then wanting to express them in that way.”

What is demisexuality?

Demisexuality is a form of asexuality when someone only develops sexual feelings for another person after forming an emotional bond. Only then are they able to feel sexually attracted to someone.

A YouTube video added: “It is believed to be a subset and add on to an individual’s identity, rather than being an individual sexual orientation. Sexual orientation as people see it, is which gender you’re sexually attracted to or not.

“Demisexuality is a way of experiencing sexual attraction – it is about how you want to go about the relationship rather than who you would want to be in a relationship with.”

Demisexuality exists all the way across the sexual spectrum; you can be straight, gay, bisexual, pansexual, or any other sexuality and be on the demisexual spectrum.

And this of course also applies to gender identities, with demisexuality existing amongst all genders.

How viewers responded

Tulisa’s honesty received plenty of positive reactions from viewers as one user wrote on X: “OH YES TULISA demisexual representation."

Another said: "Like I couldn’t adore this f**king qween more, Tulisa saying she thinks she might be demisexual is EVRYTHING!"

As a third read; "DEMISEXUAL MENTION ON IMMA CELEB I MOVED".

And a fourth sweetly admitted: "#Tulisa thank you! I’ve just learned that I’m a demisexual after years of wondering why I’m unlike most gay guys".
