Brits are absolutely roasting the American Gavin & Stacey

Brits are absolutely roasting the American Gavin & Stacey

The show had just one seven-episode season

Brits have been taken aback after seeing a clip from the US version of Gavin & Stacey - and not in a good way. Check out the trailer for here, if you dare:

Like other popular British shows, such as The Office, Shameless and The Inbetweeners, Gavin & Stacey was given a US adaptation - titled Us & Them - which aired in 2018.

In the US version, Gavin (played by Jason Ritter) lives in New York, while Stacey (played by Alexis Bledel) lives in Pennsylvania. Stacey without a Welsh accent? It’s a massive no from me.

Other than their locations, the story runs pretty similar to the original - after Gavin and Stacey strike up a friendship online, love blossoms and the pair decide to meet up in real life - but their odd families and friends can’t help but sticking their oar in as the couple try to start their new life together.

Us & Them gives Brit viewers a serious uncanny valley vibes, as we see the well-known characters - including Nessa, Pam, Gwen and even Uncle Bryn, although he’s renamed as Uncle Bryan - played by different people.

Alongside Ritter and Bledel, Us & Them also stars Ashlie Atkinson as Nessa, Dustin Ybarra as Archie (a US replacement for Smithy) and Malcolm in the Middle star Jane Kaczmarek as Pam.

The show was initially scheduled to air in Fox’s 2013-14 season but, for whatever reason, the broadcaster ended up ditching the series.

And it's unlikely it would ever have seen the light of day, except it was picked up by streaming service Crackle in 2018 and all episodes were aired on 1 October that same year. To date, it has just one seven-episode season.

A clip from the show was recently shared on TikTok, where Brits have been left fairly horrified after seeing the US version.

One person wrote: “Some programmes just don’t cross the Atlantic well. Gavin & Stacey is an absolute classic and should be left alone.”

Another said: “NO NO NO NO NOOOOO! There is some things that America just can’t do like the UK and this is one of them!!”

While someone else commented: “Watching this just pisses me off why they making it very similar, nothing will beat the original.”

A fourth added: “*crying in British* Some things just need to be left alone.”

Another fan joked: “Oh, what’s occurring? I’m not gonna lie, I don’t like it.”
