Futurama Executive Producer Hints There Could Be New Material Coming

Good news everyone!

Futurama was one of the first shows to alleviate the duopoly held by The Simpsons and South Park when it premiered in 1999. But fans were devastated when new episodes stopped coming in thick and fast in 2013.

Despite not hearing from the likes of Fry, Leela, Bender or Professor Farnsworth for nearly four years, we could be about to get some very exciting news.

The show's core group - Matt Groening, David X. Cohen, Billy West, and John Dimaggio - came together for a Reddit AMA to discuss the show. When asked if we'll see any new episodes in the future, David replied saying: "There are no new TV episodes or movies in the pipeline at the moment... HOWEVER, here and now I promise a different avenue of exciting Futurama news later this summer. No kidding.

"Keep your expectations modest and you will be pleased, possibly. I am not allowed to say more or I will be lightly phasered."

The show followed the escapades of 20th century New Yorker Phillip J. Fry, who was cryogenically frozen at the turn of the millennium, only to be brought back to life in the year 3000 in the aptly-named New New York.

Over the show's 14-year history (including a previous four-year hiatus between 2003 and 2007), there were 140 episodes spread out across seven incredible seasons. It won an incredible number of awards during its lifetime and genuinely was a smart, witty program that worked for kids and adults.

The (thus far) final episode, titled Meanwhile, involved Fry and monocular mutant Leela enjoying married life in a frozen universe, after accidentally destroying a button which caused life everywhere to jump back in time by 10 seconds. Luckily Fry's great-grandson (ok, you might need 28 'greats' in there), the eccentric Professor Farnsworth stepped in to fix the situation after spending decades trying to find them.

Some fans believe that David X. Cohen is hinting at another mobile app off the back of Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow. It's a similar vein explored by Rick and Morty creators who have stepped into the world of virtual reality.

The AMA was a treasure trove of other insightful Futurama information. One Redditor asked if there was one joke which the group was really proud of, with Matt Groening replying: "We were stuck writing the scene in which the head of Henry Kissinger in a jar was negotiating with the Balls (a sentient alien race, as seen in the episode War Is the H Word).

"It took two full days to come up with a single line for Kissinger - two full days of non-stop, unusable testicle jokes.

"We were going crazy, exasperated and fatigued with the all the 'balls' puns that we were unable to stop making. Finally, someone wearily muttered, 'This is not a productive area of discussion', and voila! Timeless comedy genius, plus we got to go home."

While Billy West revealed the episode that he's most attached to: "As a true cartoon fan, the episode, Jurassic Bark blew me away. I never thought a cartoon would have the resonance to evoke such a feeling of sadness. I was really sad. And, then I got mad at myself for my eyes misting up."
