It has been confirmed Bruce Willis will return as John McClane for a new Die Hard film.

He will make his comeback in 'part-prequel, part-sequel' Die Hard: Year One.

Digital Spy reports, Willis, has been confirmed to reprise his role in the present day. Willis last played the character in 2013's A Good Day To Die Hard.

The movie will see McClane return as a rookie police officer in the early 1980s, with the rest of the film set in the present day.

Ahead of that film's release, Willis said: "I'm really pleased to continue to be asked back to do other versions and other incarnations of Die Hard. The first one really is... that's all there is. Everything else is just trying to be as good as that film."

Although director Len Wiseman has said it would be a struggle finding someone to play a younger Willis.

In an interview with Christina Radish, director Len Wiseman had this to say: "The reason I say prequel/sequel is because I wasn't going to do it without Bruce. I'm also not going to do it with Bruce being a cameo bookend gimmick.

"Its really working into the plot, with the 70s having ramifications on present-day Bruce. It inter-cuts in a very fun, imaginative way with present-day John McClane.

"The film itself will take place on New Years Eve 1979, so trying to gear things towards that would be fun, if we could come out around the same time, but these movies take their own paths."

The last movie in the series A Good Day to Die Hard got a lot of stick from critics upon release four years ago, despite that it still made more than $300 million (£222m) worldwide by the time of its release on home video.

Fun fact: Bruce Willis was actually pretty lucky to be able to take the role in the first film as Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Burt Reynolds and Richard Gere all turned it down. The more you know.
