We all love the James Bond franchise but every so often the series needs shaking up in order to keep it fresh.

American Beauty director Sam Mendes has directed the past two Bond films but wasn't interested in making a third, saying he thinks it's time for someone else to take the helm after the slightly underwhelming Spectre.

Now according to bookies' odds, it looks like that someone will be Christopher Nolan. With the Dark Knight trilogy, Inception and Dunkirk under his belt among some other classics, he's clearly a man who knows how to make a blockbuster.

Ladbrokes' odds show Nolan as the most likely choice at 2/1, closely followed by French director Yann Demange (who directed the Northern Ireland historical thriller '71) at 3/1. Third at 4/1 is the Arrival director Denis Villeneuve, although he has just agreed to a film adaptation of the sci-fi franchise Dune.

Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes told LADbible: "The betting suggests it's Nolan, Christopher Nolan, who will direct the next Bond masterpiece. With Daniel Craig back in action and Nolan at the helm, it could well be the best 007 film ever."

Nolan looks to be the top pick by other bookies too, as Paddy Power currently prices the director at 7/4 on the back of Dunkirk.

"We make Christopher Nolan the 7/4 favourite to direct the next Bond movie," said Lee Price of Paddy Power. "Fresh from breaking ground with arguably his finest ever directorial work, of course Nolan's next step would be into the can't-really-get-it-wrong franchise of Bond.

"Then again, perhaps the Inception director has just planted the idea in our brain, and we're all part of his plan to get the gig."

As Daniel Craig's Bond films have looked to be more experimental, delving into 007's past, Nolan could be an awesome choice for the director's chair.

Most importantly, Nolan's on the record as being interested in Bond and has already been in talks with the franchise's producers about it.

"A Bond movie, definitely," Nolan said in an interview with Playboy earlier this year. "I've spoken to the producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson over the years.

"I deeply love the character, and I'm always excited to see what they do with it," he added. "Maybe one day that would work out. You'd have to be needed, if you know what I mean. It has to need reinvention; it has to need you. And they're getting along very well."

With Daniel Craig confirmed to be back in action as Bond for a fifth time, maybe Nolan's twisting storylines and special effect trickery would be a shot in the arm for the Bond franchise.

Nolan may turn out to not only be the director that the 25th Bond film deserves, but also the one that it needs right now.

Ladbrokes' full odds on the new Bond director:

Christopher Nolan 2/1

Yann Demange 3/1

Denis Villeneuve 4/1

David Mackenzie 5/1

Edgar Wright 6/1

The Coen Brothers 8/1

Sam Mendes 10/1
