The first pictures of Jim Carrey as Dr Robotnik in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog live-action film have been released and - you have been warned - they have the potential to ruin your childhood.
Everyone remembers Dr Robotnik, right? The evil ovoid video game antagonist who seems hell-bent on using the most arcane methods to stop a tiny blue hedgehog collecting rings.
Weird flex, but whatever.

Anyway, the first thing that we notice from the pictures is that he appears to have lost a considerable amount of weight.
The second thing that we'll notice is that Jim Carrey's portrayal of Dr. Ivo 'Eggman' Robotnik has a decent head of hair. In the video games and cartoons he has always been bald. Perhaps that was a style choice and he's simply chosen to grow it out?
These leaked images come to us courtesy of @SEGAbits, which is a fan news account devoted to the SEGA world.

More in keeping with tradition, Carrey clearly has the red jacket, the aviation goggles and a delightfully twisted and bushy moustache.
He also seems to be flying some sort of ridiculous flying machine, possibly staring down the eponymous hedgehog, waiting for his next cunning plan to backfire at him.
That same SEGA fan news account also shared another photo of Jim Carrey sporting the same 'do, that was apparently shared via his Instagram. A cursory search of that account shows that the photo isn't there, but perhaps it has been deleted.

The first image was confirmed - well, sort of - by the editor of Birth.Death.Movies, Scott Wampler.
He said that the image had been shown at a CinemaCon event earlier in April during a private screening of a trailer for the movie. That seems legit.
He went on to describe Carrey's performance - from what little would have been shown - as 'late 90s Jim Carrey mode'.

That bodes well, given some of Carrey's exuberant acting performances during that time. Sure The Cable Guy wasn't his best work, but whatever.
If the reports from @SEGAbits are to be believed, the trailer for the film could drop at any point today. That might give us the answer to a few key questions.
Among those are: why does he look a bit like Sportacus from LazyTown? Is he going to undergo some traumatic event (most likely hedgehog-related) that will cause his weight to balloon and hair to fall out?

And, of course, is this movie going to ruin my enjoyment of classic video games?
We can only pray that it doesn't.
