Indiana Jones Has Been Crowned The Greatest Film Character Of All Time

There have been thousands of brilliant film characters over the years so good luck to whoever tries to decide which one is the absolute best.

But fair play to anyone who has a go - a poll conducted by the magazine Total Film has declared the wise-cracking (and whip-cracking) archaeologist Indiana Jones to be the very best film character of all time.

And veteran actor Harrison Ford was lucky enough to bag two roles in the top five, as his other lovable rogue created by George Lucas, Han Solo, made third in the list.

Seventy-five-year-old movie legend Ford has played Indiana Jones four times, starting in 1981 in Raiders of the Lost Ark, reprising the role in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) and most recently in 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

With a fifth Indiana Jones film forthcoming in 2020, Ford's character has endured for almost forty years, making it no surprise that Jones has been chosen by fans as the best character ever.

Sandwiched in between Ford's two most iconic roles in second place on the list is Batman, who has been portrayed by six different actors starting with Michael Keaton in 1989's Batman.

The highest female character in the list, in fourth place, is Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley, the first hero of the Alien franchise.

Finishing off the top five is MI6's finest 00-agent James Bond, who has shown his pun-tastic abilities in over 25 films.

The rest of the top ten are Robert De Niro's Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver, Anthony Hopkins' charming serial killer Hannibal Lecter, Lord of the Rings wizard Gandalf, Batman's arch-nemesis The Joker and the iconic Princess Leia, played by the Carrie Fisher, who died in December 2016.

Total Film's poll was carried out as part of their Greatest Movie Character Ever issue and attracted over 8,000 votes.

To celebrate the issue, the magazine has been published with 100 different covers, each one with a different character from the poll on the front. Decent collectors' challenge, that.

So now you know the undisputed Best Film Character Ever is. Until someone does the exact same poll again next year.
