Margot Robbie: Filming Sex Scene In ‘Wolf Of Wall Street’ Was 'Embarrassing'

“It’s just a very weird thing and you have to bury the embarrassment and absurdity, really deep, and fully commit”

Martin Scorsese's Wolf of Wall Street was a box office sensation, with Leonardo DiCaprio giving yet another outstanding performance as the crooked stockbroker, Jordan Belfort.

However, you could argue it was Margot Robbie's star-turning role as his wife that stole the show.

Although she fully nailed it as the uber-glamorous Naomi Lapaglia, Robbie has opened up about how playing the character didn't come easily - particularly when it came to filming that sex scene with Hollywood heavyweight DiCaprio.

For an article published by Porter magazine, which hailed the actress 'The New Queen of Hollywood', Robbie recalled the provocative shot, describing it as 'weird' and 'embarrassing'.

For those of you who haven't seen the movie, the scene sees Robbie seducing DiCaprio in Basic Instinct fashion, touching herself and calling his character 'Daddy'.

She said: "It doesn't come across when you're watching the movie, but in reality we're in a tiny bedroom with 30 crew crammed in."

Revealing that the camera crew consisted of all men, Robbie added: "For 17 hours I'm pretending to be touching myself.

"It's just a very weird thing and you have to bury the embarrassment and absurdity, really deep, and fully commit."

You've got to hand it to her - she fully committed in every sense of the word, and the moment's gone on to become one of the most famous in the entire film.

And it was, in fact, this exact scene that helped Robbie to bag the role, as she impressed Scorsese by slapping DiCaprio during the audition instead of kissing him.

Speaking of the audition in Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People Issue, the director applauded Margot for her handiwork, stating: "She clinched her part in The Wolf of Wall Street during our first meeting by hauling off and giving Leonardo DiCaprio a thunderclap of a slap on the face.

"[It was] an improvisation that stunned us all."

Damn straight. There are very few wannabe performers in this world who would dare give DiCaprio a whacking great slap and she did it with gusto. Sometimes when you really want something, you've got to think outside the box and for Robbie it's turned out to be one of the best decisions she's ever made.

Before her Wall Street performance, Robbie was a member of the Neighbours cast and had enjoyed a handful of low-key TV roles. Thanks to the 2014 film, she's burst into the mainstream consciousness with her name featuring in the likes of Suicide Squad, I Tonya, and new movie Mary Queen of Scots - and she's currently filming with Quentin Tarantino for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

It's no wonder she feels no regrets over filming that scene.
