A new horror series has dropped on Netflix today - are you ready for Marianne? Social media is buzzing about it. Check out the trailer below:

It's the time of the year where Netflix starts gearing up for Halloween with the release of several spooky shows and films, but it's this new original series that looks to be leading the way this autumn.

Aptly released today - Friday the 13th - the series is split into eight episodes and follows a young writer named Emma (played by Victorie Du Bois), who discovers that the characters she's created in her best selling horror novels have come to life and are wreaking havoc.

Among those is the titular character Marianne, who has haunted Emma's dreams since childhood and seems determined to wreck her life and - in her own words - 'punish' her.

Marianne looks set to be another hit for the streaming service.

As the trailer shows, there's plenty of shock and suspense to look forward to, plus a body buried in the forest and people becoming possessed (by Marianne, we can only suspect). Other striking clips include someone cut with inscriptions emerging from water, while the biggest shock is reserved at the end, as Marianne looms over Emma while she lies terrified in her bed.

Described in the trailer as a witch who 'enters your soul', the creepy Marianne stalks her victim at every turn. Author Emma supposedly wrote her horror novels as a way to fight the nightmare nemesis, but she ultimately admits that she doesn't know yet how to fully get rid of her. It looks like she's going to have work out how pretty quickly over the series' eight episodes.

With the series having only just dropped, there aren't too many reviews out there yet, but Twitter has been abuzz with appraisal. One user wrote: "Marianne is intense/terrifying/disturbingGeez Netflix," although recommended people watch in French with subtitles, rather than the English dubbed version.

Another person agreed, commenting "Just started watching #Marianne #Netflix man this show is scary."

The series presents the possibility of a breakthrough for actress Victoire du Bois. Until now perhaps her biggest role was a supporting character in the 2017 romantic coming-of-age film Call Me By Your Name, which received four Academy Award nominations.

Marianne, meanwhile, is played by Mireille Herbstmeyer - another actress who is little-known outside of her homeland, while the rest of the cast is littered with up and coming French actors as opposed to established names.

Netflix's Twitter recommends watching it 'with company and locked doors'. That sounds like good advice to me.
