Shark movie aficionados out there will likely remember Deep Blue Sea, the 1999 Samuel L. Jackson film that has a pretty good claim for being the best shark movie ever apart from Jaws.

Now fans of the sci-fi horror film will be delighted to see that the trailer for the long-awaited sequel to Deep Blue Sea has been released, almost twenty years on from the original film. Check it out above.

The sequel stars Dannielle Savre (Bring It On: All or Nothing) as shark conservationist Dr. Misty Calhoun, a scientist who has serious concerns about billionaire Carl Durant (Michael Beach)'s experiments on bull sharks - with good reason.

In the trailer, we can see that Calhoun's scepticism about Durant's experiments is well-founded, as the sharks fail to obey their human masters and instead break free to go on a flesh-eating rampage instead. Who would have thunk it?

These aren't any ordinary sharks either, as Durant has genetically altered the sharks to make them full of "teeth, muscle, and killer instincts." Sounds kind of like normal sharks to me, but hey ho.

From the trailer of Deep Blue Sea 2, no doubt we can expect a lot of murky underwater shots, gratuitous bite-induced gore and sudden jump scares. My favourite.

Although shark-horror films have gone slightly out of fashion in recent years, the producers of Deep Blue Sea 2 certainly think this will be a worthwhile addition to horror fans' catalogues.

"We are a true sequel. We wanted to keep to the spirit of Deep Blue Sea and why people love it," said creative executive for Warner Bros., Matt Bierman, of Deep Blue Sea 2.

"The research was used on the sharks in Deep Blue Sea 2 comes from the mythology and story line of the first movie. We have given the lead shark a personality and hope the fans will embrace that as it really helps the storytelling and the narrative in a way that the first one didn't.

"Deep Blue Sea has a slightly slower build but once the rubber band snaps things go boom really quickly!"

Deep Blue Sea 2 will be a straight-to-DVD release - always a worrying sign about a film's quality - but hey, if a film scares us right out of our seats it doesn't matter how good it is. No doubt we'll be watching it regardless.
