The Top 100 Films Of All Time Have Been Revealed

When there are lists of films, TV shows, songs and albums it often gets people's knickers in a twist.

A lot of people have differing opinions, meaning no "Top 100" or whatever can genuinely be representative, as there's always some dolt who reckons Miley Cyrus' 'The Climb' is better than The Beatles' 'All You Need Is Love'. Don't get me wrong, 'The Climb' is a tune, like.

Still, more often than not the titles in these lists are fairly accurate, they just happen to be out of order.

Empire conducted a survey with 5,000 readers to find the top 100 films of all time. We can say that the results are probably as close to conclusive as you can get, given it's probably the biggest film mag in the world.

The Godfather topped the list, which I don't think anyone can have any complaints with. It beat 2014's winner of the same poll, The Empire Strikes Back, which had to settle for second best on this occasion. It's still the best Star Wars film though (don't @ me).

Taking the third spot was Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight, with a big chunk of responsibility falling on the shoulders of the late Heath Ledger, who portrayed The Joker before his death.

The following entrants in the top ten probably can't be contested, but there is room to switch them about a bit.

The Shawshank Redemption took up fourth - seems fair. It was followed by Pulp Fiction and then Goodfellas. I guess it depends what mood you're in - some days it might be the former, other days it might be the latter that seems the best.

The next movie was the second entry from George Lucas, this time an Indiana Jones classic Raider of the Lost Ark. The filmmaker also had one more film in the top ten, the epic that kicked off the Star Wars franchise - A New Hope - which came in at nine.

That was sandwiched in between Jaws (eighth) and Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

Now, there are going to be a lot of debates that come out of this list, but my word the final film may cause the biggest. LOTR is a trilogy compiled of three great movies, and it is quite hard to pick out which one is best, but surely it's The Two Towers?

Anyway, as I say it's mostly down to opinion.

"Empire readers turned out in their thousands to vote and, forty-five years after release, it's fantastic to see The Godfather continue to elicit such affection from movie lovers," editor-in-chief, Terri White said. "In addition to such perennial favourites such as Star Wars and The Shawshank Redemption, it's also encouraging to see a number of recent releases have already found a place among cinema goers' most cherished films."

To see the full list you can pick up Empire's latest edition on June 15.
