Reality television has its fair share of thrills and spills; after all, things can go horribly wrong and excitingly right when cameras are following people all over the place.

But few moments can be as bad as Claire Champlin's on the 2010 season of The Amazing Race.

There's no doubt you will have seen a GIF, image or the video itself, but in case you're not familiar with 'Watermelon Woman', here's the clip.

For those unaware about the show, it pits teams of two against each other as they run, bike, drive and fly across the world and complete different challenges.

The challenge bestowed to Claire and her buddy Brook Roberts was to slingshot a watermelon into a suit of armour in order to advance to the next stage of the race.

Sounds like an alright task that doesn't involve much danger, however Claire found out the hard way that there is risk in everything that you do.

After failing to hit the target several times, Claire pulled back the slingshot and let go, only for the watermelon to catch on the pouch and come flying back to hit her square in the face.

Claire looked like she was pretty sore after the incident.

Anyone who has held a watermelon will know that those things are sturdy, so imagine that hitting your face at a pretty decent speed.

It's been years since the moment went viral across the planet and finally it's been revealed what happened inside Claire's mind when shit well and truly hit the fan.

Speaking to news.com.au, the reality TV contestant said: "At the time I was so little so to get enough tension in the slingshot I had to lay all the way down. When I went to release it I had too much tension and the leather strap wrapped around the watermelon and flung back into my face.

"I didn't know what had happened. I was laying on my back and it was like I'd been in a car accident, I was just in shock. I started pulling the watermelon off my face and I thought it was my own flesh.

Ouch.

"I said to Brooke, 'What do we do now?' And that's when her big line came: 'You have to finish...they don't call it The Amazing Race for nothing!'"

Surprisingly, she didn't suffer a completely broken face and instead had a swollen lip and a black eye. The show's medical team offered her some Panadol and off she went to continue the race.

When the clip aired before the season did, she was overwhelmed with emails and messages asking if she was the woman who copped a watermelon to the face.

In the nine years since, Claire has started doing interior design and now has a family with three kids - so she's definitely doing something right.
