A woman who cut off her husband's penis has said she has no remorse regarding the incident and now plans to tell her side of the story.

In 1993, Lorena Bobbitt took a sharp kitchen knife and sliced off the penis of her partner, John Wayne Bobbitt, while he slept.

She then left the house with the appendage in hand, drove off and threw it in a field, before calling the police and confessing to the bloody crime.

Now, almost 26 years on from that fateful night, she has spoken out and says she doesn't regret anything.

Speaking on the Today show, Lorena said: "Oh my god, how could you regret something that was not planned?

"I mean, how could you? You have to understand, I wasn't in my right mindset."

Lorena, now 49, has always claimed she was driven to the violent act after being raped by her husband at their home in Manassas, Virginia, US.

Lorena Bobbitt will tell her side of the story in a new Amazon Prime docu-series.

The police were able to find the missing penis and doctors managed to reattach it, after a 10-hour surgery.

John went on to forge a career in the porn industry while Lorena has tried to keep a low profile.

But a new docu-series, set to hit Amazon Prime next week, will put Lorena back under the microscope as she tells her version of events, in light of the #MeToo era.

Looking back at how the media handled the incident at the time, Lorena says they were too obsessed with John's member.

Speaking to the New York Times, she said: "They always just focused on [the penis].

"And it's like they all missed or didn't care why I did what I did."

She continued: "I was the subject of so many jokes in the 90s and to me it was just cruel. They didn't understand. Why would they laugh about my suffering?"

When Lorena was first approached by Get Out filmmaker Jordan Peele to make a documentary, she had obvious reservations, fearing what was the most traumatic period of her life would again be turned into a laughing stock.

But Peele managed to win her round and convinced her to let him tell the 'real' story about that awful night.

John, now 51, also recently spoke out about what happened, revealing to US talk show host Dr Oz that he even contemplated killing himself at the time.

He said: "The doctor comes up to me and says, 'Show me your wrist.'

"And I said, 'That's not where I'm cut.' [The doctor said] 'Show me where you're cut.'

"So I pulled off my pants and blood is all over the place, some guy's putting towels on me, he kept putting all these towels on me and I was, like, pretty much suicidal at that point.

"I'm kind of mutilated in the most worst way a man can be mutilated and I was self-terminated, and I was looking for something that can end it with looking around."

The new series will stream on Amazon Prime from 15 February.
