Christian Bale’s return as Batman has been a topic of discussion for DC fans ever since he left the role in 2012, and with the current trend of superheroes returning to their iconic roles years later many fans hope that Bale will be the latest to do this.
Michael Keaton came back as Batman in The Flash, the duo of Spider-Man actors returned for No Way Home, and the original Fox X-Men cast are now set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday. Many have hoped that Bale would return to the role of Bruce Wayne one last time and has even spoken about what it would take in the past.
Rumours have begun spreading however that Bale is set to return in an adaption of Batman Beyond, a beloved Frank Miller comic in which Batman is an old man similar to Jackman’s portrayal of Wolverine in Logan.
The idea of Bale playing an older gruff Bruce Wayne may be incredibly appealing to fans, but, unfortunately, the rumour does not appear to be based in any real fact.
Christian Bale on a Batman return
What may come as a surprise to fans of the Dark Knight trilogy is that Bale isn’t actually entirely against returning to the character, but he has a very simple condition for this.
Advert
Speaking to ScreenRant in 2022, he stated that Bale and Nolan had a pact in which they would do three movies and leave it at that, saying they both agreed to ‘walk away and not linger’.
He added however: “In my mind, it would be something if Chris Nolan ever said to himself, ‘You know what, I've got another story to tell'. And if he wished to tell that story with me, I'd be in."

This, however, is not likely to happen for a long time. Nolan himself has already bluntly said ‘no’ in the past when asked if another could be in the pipeline, and the only motivator that could lead to him revisiting that franchise would be if his movies took a downturn in success.
Considering Oppenheimer earned just shy of $1 billion won seven Oscars (including Best Picture and Best Director) and The Odyssey is sitting at $1.3 billion with Variety considering it second-favourite to win Best Picture. In other words, it’s unlikely Nolan feels the need to return to Batman anytime soon.
The original source claims Bale is returning for Batman Beyond, but he is nowhere near old enough to play that version of Bruce just yet
The rumour originated from the Going to the Pictures podcast which claimed a ‘high level banker’ had told him Bale was returning as Bruce Wayne in an adaption of Batman Beyond.
This led to a piece and a Reddit post discussing the rumour, but Bale is nowhere near old enough to act in a remotely faithful version of that project just yet.
Batman Beyond tells a story where Bruce retired as the caped crusader in his mid-50s before coming out of retirement almost 25 years later to mentor a young teenager to take over the mantle of Batman.

Whilst this would maybe be a perfect project for Bale to revisit in 20-30 years time, Bruce is roughly 80 years old in Batman Beyond, with the English actor currently only being 52 years old.
All in all, whilst there may be a kernel of truth in a Bale return further down the line, this particular rumour seems to be just a bit off the mark.
