Daniel Radcliffe has addressed returning to Harry Potter to 'play another character'

The actor took centre stage in all eight of the Harry Potter films, but reckons he could have done a good job taking on two other characters

Despite bagging the starring role and becoming the face of one of the most successful film franchises of all time, Daniel Radcliffe couldn't help feeling a bit envious of his co-stars.

The actor, 34, might have taken centre stage in all eight of the Harry Potter films, but he previously admitted that he wouldn't have minded portraying one of the more demure - but still significant - characters in the wizarding world.

During an appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast in August 2021, Radcliffe was asked what other roles he would have liked to play if he could have waved a magic wand and gone back in time.

That's not to say that the Brit didn't enjoy gallivanting around as the Boy Who Lived for ten years, but hypothetically, he would have also loved to take on two characters in Harry Potter who he reckons were particularly 'great'.

Sweetly, it's the two blokes who starred as father figures to his infamous character which Radcliffe was most intrigued by, although he confessed it might have something to do with the people who played them.

He explained: "I would probably want to go with like, Sirius or Lupin.

"Those were always the two characters that I was like, 'They’re great!' And also like, I’m obviously biased by my experience of filming those scenes, with those people, and they’re like some of my favourite memories."

Radcliffe was referring to Gary Oldman, who starred as Harry's godfather Sirius Black, and David Thewlis, who portrayed his late dad's best pal and Marauder's Map co-creator, Professor Remus Lupin.

He recalled how the pair both helped him to 'figure out what acting was' as he navigated worldwide fame from the tender age of 12 and through his teen years.

The Guns Akimbo actor said: "I have really, really fond memories of all my scenes with Gary Oldman and David Thewlis.

"They were some of the first scenes on the third and the fifth film where I started to feel like I was a young man who was just starting to figure out what acting was, and they were pretty cool people to be around."

As you can imagine, the fact that the Harry Potter had brought up the idea of playing another character caused quite a stir among fans of the film franchise, as they reckoned that Radcliffe could live out this fantasy in a Harry Potter reboot.

But when asked how seriously his supporters should have taken the discussion on the podcast, the dad-of-one urged people to take it with a pinch of salt - well in fact, he wants Potterheads to take it with a whole handful.

Just weeks after the podcast was released three years ago, he cleared up the speculation surrounding him returning to Harry Potter as someone else during an interview with SiriusXM.

Radcliffe said: "I think I'm remembering right, that the question was like a hypothetical of who else would you have liked to play in the series. There's always going to be you know talk of some sort of [Harry Potter reboot], but it genuinely is always a lot more in the media than in actuality.

"I've never been contacted by anybody about any future Harry Potter films, so you know, I don't think it's something that is coming. But of course, now that I have said that, I have certainly brought it upon myself now."

If that wasn't clear enough for you, basically, Radcliffe was only talking theoretically and most likely would be wearing that same lightning scar again if Harry Potter was ever revisited.

He predicted that he would not be the last Boy Who Lived who we would 'see in his lifetime' back in 2019, saying he reckons there is potential for other avenues of the wizarding world to be explored.

Radcliffe added: "I feel like there are other stories from that world that you could absolutely turn into a TV series, 100 percent. A series with the older generation [Marauders], that could be very cool."
