Jared Leto's bizarre method acting in Morbius as divisive movie drops on Netflix

Jared Leto was so committed to keeping in character while filming Morbius he actually held up production.

The Oscar-winning star is known for his method acting, and it was no different when he played the role of Doctor Michael Morbius in the 2022 superhero flick.

Upon its release Morbius, which has recently landed on Netflix, flopped and was met with overwhelmingly negative reviews from critics - it currently holds a score of just 15 percent on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, although it does have a much higher audience score of 71 percent, while on IMDb it sits at 5.2 out of 10.

For those who haven’t seen it, Dr Morbius has a rare blood disease who ends up inadvertently infecting himself with a form of vampirism when trying to cure his illness.

In an attempt to accurately portray Dr Morbius’ physical limitations during filming, Leto would continue to use his crutches and limp around.

However, this ended up eating into a lot of time on set because every time he needed a toilet break he’d take about 45 minutes.

While this may sound like a silly rumour, director Daniel Espinosa confirmed that it was actually true during an interview with Uproxx.

The journalist asked if it was true that Leto was 'so committed to playing Michael Morbius that even when he had to go to the bathroom, he would use his crutches and slowly limp to get to the bathroom'.

They continued: "But it was taking so long between for pee breaks, that a deal was made with him to get him a wheelchair so someone could wheel him there quicker and he agreed to that. Is this true?"

To which Espinosa replied: “Yes.

“Because I think that what Jared thinks, what Jared believes, is that somehow the pain of those movements, even when he was playing normal Michael Morbius, he needed, because he’s been having this pain his whole life.

"Even though, as he’s alive and strong, it has to be a difference. Hey, man, it’s people’s processes. All of the actors believe in processes. And you, as director, you support whatever makes it as good as you can be."

He added: "I think that all of them have these traits. If you want a completely normal person that does only things that you understand, then you’re in the wrong business. Because what’s different is what makes them tick."
