Mara Wilson says a Matilda sequel is 'possible' but admits there are 'some issues'
Matilda star Mara Wilson has said a sequel could be ‘possible’ but there are 'some issues’ that would need to be addressed first.
Wilson shot to fame playing Natalie Hillard in the 1993 classic Mrs Doubtfire alongside the late, great Robin Williams.
The following year, she appeared in Miracle on 34th Street, before landing the titular role in Matilda in 1996.
However, despite achieving early success in 2000 Wilson took an extended hiatus from Hollywood and has since only returned to voice acting.

Speaking earlier this year, Wilson admitted that she was happy to keep things that way, telling PEOPLE: "There aren't always roles for women of my specific age and my specific looks and demographic and everything.
“And I would really have to change myself a lot to be able to fit into Hollywood's mould and I don't really want to do that."
She also suggested that she might not be ‘super successful’ if she had decided to stay working in movies.
“I think way more about what would have happened if I’d gotten out earlier than I do about what would have happened if I’d stayed in,” she said at the time.
“I don’t know who I would be if I had stayed in. I would be totally different. I might be miserable.”
But it seems as though a sequel to Matilda could tempt Wilson back onto the big screen - so long as any potential scriptwriters were able to iron out a few wrinkles first.
Wilson recently appeared at Fanboy Expo in Knoxville, Tennessee, where she addressed speculation about a potential sequel.
“People always ask me about doing a Matilda 2. And that could be possible,” the 38-year-old said, according to PEOPLE.
But as yet, Wilson isn’t sure that a plot for a second movie would make sense.
“One thing that people always say is, ‘Oh, maybe it could be Matilda’s daughter.’ And I have some issues with that, because I think Matilda’s powers come from her adversity,” Wilson continued.
“They come from the bad things that she went through, and the whole point is that she overcame these things.”
And that wasn’t the only problem that Wilson foresaw.
“Also, and this is a tricky question, but who would Matilda marry?” she questioned.
“Who’s good enough for Matilda? Matilda’s such an awesome character that I can’t imagine who she would marry and have kids with, you know?”
Whether a second Matilda flick should, could or would ever be made remains to be seen, but Wilson said making the original gave her a lifelong friend in co-star Danny DeVito.
Wilson, who lost her mother to breast cancer just months before Matilda was released, said DeVito took ‘very good care’ of her and her family.
“Yes, there were hard days. But there were also days where it felt like summer camp. And I am still friends with the people that I worked on it with today,” she said.
During the same event, Wilson also shared that she turned down a Mrs Doubtfire sequel as at the time she believed sequels weren’t ‘any good’, but then added that we’ve seen a change over the last few years.
“I do think that we’ve seen a lot more really good reboots in maybe the past 10 years, but at the time, there was no guarantee that it was going to be any good,” she admitted.
