Oscars viewers spot Robert Downey Jr sending Jimmy Kimmel message after speech on his addiction history

Oscars viewers spot Robert Downey Jr sending Jimmy Kimmel message after speech on his addiction history

He seemingly didn't appreciate the comedian's comments

Oscar viewers thought Robert Downey Jr. didn't appear pleased in the opening stages of last night's (10 March) awards ceremony — and he seemingly let everyone know about it.

If you didn't know, the Oscars took place last night and the most prestigious awards were handed out to the Academy's choices for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director.

But in and amongst all the little golden trophies being handed out, are the smart quips and monologues from hosts and winners alike.

Jimmy Kimmel hosted this year's rendition of the Academy Awards, and it seems like some fans have taken issue with one of the people he decided to target.

That person is none other than Iron Man, aka Robert Downey Jr, and Kimmel particularly went after an aspect of his past.

Hosted at the prestigious Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, the talk show host is actually hosting for the fourth time in eight years, and the 56-year-old traditionally began his speech with digs at certain celebrities.

Robert Downey Jr was at the Oscars for his role in Oppenheimer.

Kimmel made jokes referencing the actor's past of substance abuse, quipping: “This is the highest point of Robert Downey Jr’s career… well, one of the highest points.”

As the Oppenheimer star tapped his nose, Kimmel asked: “Was that too on the nose or a drug motion you made?”

Which followed the actor doing a motion that appeared to gesture to the comedian to move on from the joke.

“Look at him, he’s so handsome, so talented, he’s won every award there is to win,” continued Kimmel.

The star appeared to make a motion to 'move on' from the jokes.

“Is that an acceptance speech in your pocket or do you just have a very rectangular penis."

In his early career, Downey Jr faced substance addiction and various drug charges.

Back in 1999, he served 12 months in prison for missing numerous court ordered drug tests. He has been sober since 2003.

Users were split on whether this was in good taste or not, with one commenting on X (formerly Twitter): "Not very nice for Robert Downey Jr. to hear on the night he won his first Oscar.

"What a tool. Does ANYONE think Jimmy Kimmel is funny??"

Another said: "Someone tell Jimmy Kimmel that Robert Downey Jr drug jokes are no longer funny (not that they ever really were tbh).. RDJ looks so uncomfortable."

A third put: "I thought that was mean and nasty..

"Robert Downey Jr didn't deserve that diss, Jimmy Kimmel is not funny..."

However, some saw the lighter side of the joke, with one saying: "Jimmy mocks people all the time."

While another thought that the actor was 'in on the jokes', adding: "Lighten up."

But ultimately, nobody was safe from Jimmy Kimmel, as he got a few jabs in towards other attendees in his opening speech.

Robert Downey Jr won the Best Supporting Actor award for his role in Oppenheimer on the night though, so you can guess who got the last laugh.
