We Are Making Coffee All Wrong And Don't Even Know It

If you want to be serious about coffee, you need to know

Is there anything better than a good cup of coffee? No. No there is not. And in the morning, it's imperative that I have one otherwise I'm going to be completely asleep all day, making my way through life like a zombie.

But apparently I've been making coffee all wrong. This is so upsetting! I didn't realise I'd been inadvertently ruining my morning cup of joe.

And you probably have too.

So here's the ways in which you've been ruining your coffee and how to fix them.

First of all, don't use tap water.

Tap water is apparently full of chemicals that change the taste of your coffee. If you've got a high-end coffee maker then it might have a built-in filter, but otherwise, the water from the tap is ruining the taste of your coffee!

There's no need to start using Evian and bankrupting yourself in the process. Just get a filter.

And while we're on the water you use, it's probably too hot. If you're boiling your water and using it immediately, you're probably burning those coffee beans. There's no worse coffee smell than burnt coffee! Also, it tastes like cigarettes.

The water is supposed to be just under boiling - around 96C.

I store my coffee in the freezer to keep it fresh, but apparently this is all wrong. Putting your coffee beans in the fridge or the freezer is actually drying it out. You should instead be keeping it in a dark, cool air-tight container.

Noted.

And you have to use your coffee in a few weeks - don't make that bag last! It will go off after that. No one wants that.

Ditch ground beans and go for whole beans - it's more effort but it's worth it. Apparently, we should be paying more attention to the size of our granules as this affects the taste, too. If your coffee is bitter, the granules are too small. If your coffee is too flat, it's been ground too coarsely. And you really should be using a scale to measure out the beans.

For the perfect brew, you have to hit that sweet spot.

And don't grind your beans in one big batch as that will make it lose its taste. It's a bit more effort, but you should grind the coffee immediately before making it.

And when it comes to drinking coffee, don't let it stew in the pot too long or it will go stale.

Happy drinking!
