The honest answer: yes, but only if you approach it with the right expectations. 2K27 isn't just an incremental roster update — 2K has implemented clever new features tailored to pull casual hoop fans back into the fold, reminding us of the good old days while giving hardcore players new systems to master. This is especially true for MyCAREER Eras, where you can choose iconic historical windows like the Jordan, Kobe, or LeBron eras. If current NBA storylines aren't doing it for you, these nostalgic options and deep roleplaying setups offer a total breath of fresh air. I spent time running through the main modes — including MyCAREER, MyNBA Legacy, and Casual Corner—using review code in Australia and securing an early hands-on preview of 2K27 during Community Day inside the Intuit Dome to see if this instalment deserves a spot in your rotation.
The mobile face scan will instantly humble you
Before stepping onto the hardwood, 2K's updated HQ mobile companion app prompts you for a quick face scan. The updated high-fidelity texture rendering technology is wildly accurate. It picks up subtle facial scars, hyper-specific skin texture, and every patchy spot in a grainy beard. It takes roughly 30 seconds of staring into your phone camera to realise two things: the tech is impressive, and you urgently need to groom your beard.
Once you get past the initial emotional hit of seeing your chopped self digitised in 4K, bringing your actual face into MyCAREER Eras makes playing alongside retro legends feel surprisingly immersive.

MyCAREER: Storylines, city fits and build strategy
For the modern narrative path, 2K introduced "Fire & Concrete," an 11-chapter story featuring rapper Vince Staples as your character's cousin, Cam. It takes you from high school to the G League, hitting iconic streetball grounds like a recreated Rucker Park before draft night. You can play through the prelude to climb draft boards or jump straight to the pros—which I did, immediately signing with Golden State to help Steph Curry secure ring number five.
The customisation this year is vast and well-considered. The City feels genuinely active, and the options to express yourself across different styles are extensive. You can pick up streetwear pieces from global heavyweights like BAPE, HELLSTAR and True Religion, or rebrand your hooper in local drip thanks to Aussie streetwear giant Culture Kings making its way into the game this year. Interestingly, the VC gap between flexing high-end BAPE gear and repping local Culture Kings threads is remarkably small — roughly a 5,000 VC difference. Whether that means BAPE is surprisingly cheap or Culture Kings has gone full luxury, I'm not entirely sure. But no matter how you decide to style your hooper—whether you create a male or female MyPLAYER — you can put that ish on, pull up to the blacktop and drop 21 points in style.
That being said, the MyPLAYER Builder can feel overwhelming if you've been away from the franchise. Between 53 unique badges, new Badge Tokens, Cap Breakers, and the overhauled Synergy system, choice paralysis sets in quickly. To avoid misallocating your hard-earned VC on an unoptimised build, look up guides from trusted community creators like Joe Knows or Solo before committing. Fortunately, 2K now lets you test your creation in 3v3, 5v5, and Freestyle modes before locking in attributes, saving you from spending hours tweaking sliders on static screens.
A co-ed city that fits the local vibe
One of the best surprises in 2K27 is how naturally integrated female MyPLAYERs are across The City. In runs, you might not even realise you are balling alongside female MyPLAYER builds until a highlight pops up. Because all builds run on the exact same physical framework, on-court skill remains the ultimate equaliser.
For basketball fans in Australia, this design choice hits close to home. Most social hoop leagues across Sydney are unisex or run mixed male/female divisions, so seeing that exact same culture reflected in the game's main multiplayer hub feels natural. Basketball is for everyone, and 2K27 captures that local park energy organically.
Casual Corner & MyNBA Legacy: Safe havens for returning players
If high-stakes online play sounds unappealing, 2K27 offers brilliant alternative modes tailored specifically for casual sessions.
Casual Corner: This hub is built for rookies and returning players looking for low-stakes games. You start in PVE games against CPU opponents to learn your jumper and test your animations, then move to PVP runs only when you feel ready. From experience, dropping 70 points while shooting 100% from deep against entry-level CPU defence is a great way to rebuild your confidence.
MyNBA Legacy: If you prefer controlling league storylines, this single-player mode is a massive highlight. It is a 100-year franchise sandbox where you lock onto a single legend while managing the front office. I placed Victor Wembanyama on the Golden State Warriors, giving the franchise a cheat code for the next decade. Once Wemby's career wrapped up, his son can inherit specialised hereditary traits and continue the family dynasty right in the same league.
Couch Co-Op: If you just want to sink beers on the couch with mates, standard Play Now matches are still the elite casual play. Taking the 2017-18 Warriors against classic retro squads — or running 2000s All-Stars against modern teams — gives you immediate fun without having to spend a single dollar on VC or grind a player build. Side note: it is time to bring back proper couch night comps. Get three mates over, lock in 12-minute quarters, draft up a whiteboard bracket, and enforce strict FIFA-style 'Apology Rules' for anyone who loses by 30 or gets their ankles snapped in 4K.
Refined gameplay driven by physicality
