Have you ever shown up late to site and blamed it on traffic? Worn yesterday’s socks to today’s worksite? Thrown a double smoko? These are the questions we threw at tradies Lucy, a licensed plumber, and Caleb, a fourth-year electrical apprentice, in a special tradie edition of Never Have I Ever.

The rules are simple. We asked a simple ‘Never Have I Ever’ question. If they have done it, they don the ‘I Have’ hard hat. If they haven’t done it, they don’ the ‘I’ve Never’ hard hat. Easy peasy.

Now, like every game of Never Have I Ever, we threw in some silly questions. In fact, when asked about doing double smoko, Lucy wasn’t satisfied with just one ‘I Have’ hard hat — she demanded at least six. Or Caleb, who loves his Hard Yakka Toughmaxx 6Z safety boots so much he doesn’t just wear them offsite — he can wear them to bed.

But, our country’s tradies are the embodiment of toughness. Sure, they showcase physical toughness every day, but they’re also tough in how they show up for themselves and each other at work.

When faced with the question ‘never have I ever asked the crew for back-up when I was in over my head’, Caleb immediately popped his ‘I Have’ hat on, while Lucy showed a bit of self-awareness with her ‘I’ve Never’ hat.

“2026 my resolution is to start asking for help when I need it,” Lucy says.

“A) I’m sick of doing it all on my own. B) It’s just not cool, everyone needs to be helped out.”

That same type of toughness shone through when both Lucy and Caleb answered ‘I Have’ when it came to speaking up onsite if they noticed something was wrong.

“You gotta speak up,” Caleb says, “Always, always, always.”
