Barrowman first found acting success in the 1990s on the London West End stage, taking title roles in Anything Goes (1989), Matador (1991), The Phantom of the Opera (1992), Miss Saigon (1993), and Beauty and the Beast (1999). In 1998 he was nominated for an Olivier Award for his performance in The Fix.
He moved on to TV garnering hosting gigs across variety and talent shows on the BBC, including How Do Solve a Problem Like Maria (2006), and Any Dream Will Do (2007). Before long he’d graduated onto TV acting roles, first in American shows like Titans (2000) and CW’s Arrow (2012).
In the UK, he is best known for his role in BBC’s Doctor Who as Jack Harkness, a time traveller from the 51st century, first appearing on the show in 2005. The character ended up getting his own spin-off show, Torchwood, which premiered in 2006.
