John Barrowman, 55, is an Scottish-American actor, presenter and author. He is probably best known for his roles in Doctor Who and Torchwood, but has had a plentiful career on both the screen and the stage. Barrowman first found acting success in the 1990s on the London West End stage, taking title roles in Anything Goes (1989), Matador (1991), The Phantom of the Opera (1992), Miss Saigon (1993), and Beauty and the Beast (1999). He moved on to TV garnering hosting gigs across variety and talent shows on the BBC, including How Do Solve a Problem Like Maria (2006), and Any Dream Will Do (2007). Before long he’d graduated onto TV acting roles, first in American shows like Titans (2000) and CW’s Arrow (2012).
In the UK, he is best known for his role in BBC’s Doctor Who as Jack Harkness, a time traveller from the 51st century, first appearing on the show in 2005. The character ended up getting his own spin-off show, Torchwood, which premiered in 2006. Despite his run with the franchise ending, he made surprise appearances on the show in 2020, and again in the 2021 New Year’s Day special.
Off the back of his TV success, Barrowman has released a series of books, including two memoirs, and a comic strip centred on the Torchwood universe, entitled Captain Jack and the Selkie (2009).
Barrowman currently lives with husband Scott Gill between two lavish homes in California, one in Palm Springs and one in West Hollywood.
