The first full trailer for HBO's post-apocalyptic drama, The Last of Us, has finally dropped. Check it out below:

Taking to Twitter today (26 September), HBO confirmed: "Save who you can save. #TheLastOfUs is coming in 2023 to @hbomax."

The mostly wordless trailer has given fans a glimpse of the upcoming drama, showing overgrown US landscapes, live-action clickers, and characters old and new from Naughty Dog's 2013 action video game, The Last of Us, that the new series is based upon.

Starring the likes of Narcos star Pedro Pascal, Game of Thrones' Bella Ramsey and Gabriel Luna - who is known for Terminator: Dark Fate, the series will follow the story of a smuggler tasked with escorting a teenager across a post-apocalyptic United States.

The series is based on the 2013 video game, The Last of Us.
Sky/HBO

An official synopsis reads: "20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed, Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone.

"What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal heartbreaking journey as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival."

According to Rotten Tomatoes, it's expected the series will follow the plot of the first video game, and may incorporate elements from The Last of Us Part II, which is set five years after the first game.

The series is also set to expand on the game's narrative, including the addition of some elements that were previously cut from the game.

In an interview with the BBC Sounds’ Must Watch webcast, series co-creator and writer Craig Mazin said of his Naughty Dog collaborator, Neil Druckmann, on the series: “Neil at one point, he was like, ‘You know, there’s one thing we were talking about [doing in the first game] for a while,’ and then he told me what it was, and I was like — gonk! — OK, jaw drop, that’s going in.

"We have to do that."

Elements from the original video game are expected in the new series.
Naughty Dog/Sony Interactive Entertainment

This pilot season will consist of ten episodes, all written by Mazin and Druckmann, and original game composer Gustavo Santaolalla has taken on the role of composing the series.

Superfans of The Last of Us will not miss out on the global excitement with each instalment available at the same time as the US premiere each week and on demand thereafter.

The Last of Us coming exclusively to HBO, Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW in 2023.
