After more than 30 years, people around the would are being treated to a sequel to Coming To America.

The followup officially drops on Amazon Prime today (March 5) and it won't be long before Aussie audiences can soak it up.

Eddie Murphy is back as Akeem Joffer, who (as the title suggests) comes back to America in the hope of finding his long lost child.

But the iconic comedian isn't the only one making a return 33 years after the original. He will be joined by characters King Jaffe Joffer (James Earl Jones), Queen Lisa (Shari Headley), Cleo McDowell (John Amos), Maurice (Louie Anderson) and the motley barbershop crew.

Murphy is excited for audiences to see what new cast members - such as his own daughter - bring to the film.

The 59-year-old said: "What I'm most excited about the audience seeing is how amazing this movie is.

"We have incredible new cast members like Wesley Snipes, Tracy Morgan, Leslie Jones, Jermaine Fowler, KiKi Layne and my own daughter, Bella Murphy, among others, who are all so funny and really brought their A-game. It's just a great picture and I'm excited to have audiences see it."

The sequel sees King Akeem back in his native Zamunda, before once again journeying to Queens in New York - where his story began all those years ago.

Murphy said: "This is the perfect time to return to Zamunda because it's been a while since we've had a great comedy that everybody can enjoy. Zamunda is a very funny place, and the world needs that right now."

The original film was directed by John Landis, but at the helm this time is Dolemite Is My Name and Empire director Craig Brewer - who was just 16 when the first film was released.

The sequel will be released almost 33 years after the original.

"Coming to America was a cultural phenomenon that is one of the most loved and celebrated comedies of all time," said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios.

"Thanks to Eddie Murphy's comedic genius along with the brilliant filmmakers, writers and fabulous cast, we couldn't be more excited to celebrate this new adventure.

"We know audiences around the world will fall in love with this hilarious, joyful movie that will surely become a timeless favourite."

Producer Kevin Misher added: "What could be better than a return to Zamunda?

"We are so excited for Amazon Studios to bring Eddie Murphy and Coming 2 America to a worldwide audience where they can laugh again with characters they have loved for 30 years, and meet new ones that they will love for years to come."
