One user wrote: “In all seriousness, this is probably the franchise blockbuster movie to be the most excited for. Real director and a real movie star.”

Another commented: “Oh she was made for this role.”

A third wrote: “I never thought a day would come where I'd be getting excited about a Barbie movie and yet... here we are.”

While there’s still little known about the project, Robbie said a film with this kind of magnitude ‘comes with a lot of baggage...and a lot of nostalgic connections', according to British Vogue.

“But with that come a lot of exciting ways to attack it,” she said.

The Once Upon A Time In Hollywood star also spoke of director Greta Gerwig’s attachment to the project and how her involvement quickly changed people's expectations of the film.

She said: “People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ’Oh, well, maybe I don’t.’”

After signing onto the movie, the actor told the The Hollywood Reporter she intends to subvert the audience's ideas of the legendary Mattel toy’s story.

She said: "We like the things that feel a little left of centre. Something like Barbie where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, 'Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is', but our goal is to be like, 'Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different — the thing you didn’t know you wanted'."

Will Ferrell and Ryan Gosling will also be joining the cast.

And my god, we can’t wait.

Barbie is set to be released on July 21, 2023.
