Fans of the John Wick franchise had better buckle up because a fifth film has been officially green-lit.

Movie studio Lionsgate has officially confirmed John Wick 5 is happening and it will be filmed back-to-back with the fourth movie - when star Keanu Reeves gets time, of course.

The studio's CEO John Feltheimer said during an earnings call, via Deadline: "We're also busy preparing scripts for the next two instalments of our John Wick action franchise, with John Wick 4 slated to hit theatres Memorial Day weekend 2022.

"We hope to shoot both John Wick 4 & 5 back to back when Keanu becomes available early next year."

Keanu has been busy shooting The Matrix 4, which cast doubt on whether he would be able to film both projects in time for their planned release on the same weekend next year.

John Wick 4 was slated for release on 27 May 2021, while the fourth instalment in the Matrix saga has now been pushed back to 1 April 2022.

Lionsgate says the fourth Matrix movie has had its date moved back due to the coronavirus pandemic interrupting filming and production schedules.

The announcement comes after director Chad Stahelski hinted that the date could be moved in an interview with Collider.

He told the news outlet: "Between how much we want to expand the John Wick - let's just call it a 'franchise', I guess - and the pandemic, I couldn't tell you a release date for the next one. I mean, Matrix was only four weeks in when this all happened.

"So, Keanu's gotta go finish his commitment up on The Matrix, which is a big deal and which I think will probably take him until the end of the year. Then we have to go into our prep mode and the we'll start.

"So release dates, I'm sure with every production from Dave [Leitch's] stuff to our stuff, who knows right now."

Other movies titled pushed by Lionsgate include the Saw spin-off Spiral, which was set to be released later this month but will now land on 21 May 2021, while The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard has also been delayed by a year and will now be released on 20 August 2021.
